Reminds me of the floodlight failure betting scandal in the late 90s in the UK - security guard was paid by big betting syndicate to cut the floodlights at half time so all bets would not be paid out but would also not be returned.
Surely if no winner is declared all bets are voided and thus returned?Greg Rickshaww wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:16 pmReminds me of the floodlight failure betting scandal in the late 90s in the UK - security guard was paid by big betting syndicate to cut the floodlights at half time so all bets would not be paid out but would also not be returned.

Let's just say the bookmaker wasn't the most heavily regulated. Which I guess the fear is if betting goes 'underground' once again with all the affordability checks going on.Derek27 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 11:42 amSurely if no winner is declared all bets are voided and thus returned?Greg Rickshaww wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:16 pmReminds me of the floodlight failure betting scandal in the late 90s in the UK - security guard was paid by big betting syndicate to cut the floodlights at half time so all bets would not be paid out but would also not be returned.
I think the protagonists of the scheme were jailed after the security guard ,who was controlling the floodlights with a remote control, gave them up.
£349 !st class from Edinburgh to Chesterfield!!!! THREE HUNDRED AND FOURTY NINE POUNDS.
Best not to express the expletives that flew into my mind when I read that.
Excuse me but what extra do you get travelling 1st class?
!st class has to be one of the great misnomer's of our time.

I've just been held up at the tobacco kiosk by a woman spending £40 on lottery tickets. Why isn't she subjected to affordability checks? That's not recreational gambling, she's not getting pleasure out of checking her numbers. She gets frustrated and then thinks, what a waste of £40.
My understanding is - a bit more space, some complimentary tat. I've booked standard for £35. £350 vs £35 that's just ridiculous. This country!!!! F*** me!!!!
I've sometimes upgraded to 1st class for just a few quid. My brother-in-law (who's Italian) had the same problem about 20 years ago. Traveling from Edinburgh to London with his family, he had to pay £200 to upgrade to first class. He said in Italy at the time you could travel the length of the country for £12.
I always thought we were at the forefront of technology so it leaves me scratching my head why France, Germany and Japan have had reliable high-speed trains for decades and we can't even connect London to Birmingham. There's been talk of the line stopping short of London. What use is that?
More and more I think we're being hoodwinked in the UK. Ironically, if we looked at the EU we would start to be a bit envious. Anyhow I'd best shut up before I explode.Derek27 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 4:34 pmI've sometimes upgraded to 1st class for just a few quid.
