If the UK leaves the ECHR by six months notice then it would make the following null and void:

- Good Friday Agreement
- Brexit Agreement

This would cause absolute carnage in financial markets and politically leave the UK out in the wilderness for decades as there is no easy mechanism for rejoining.

🤔
It could be a lot more than that that becomes null and void.

Like a Martingaler down to his last bet, they don't want to give up. Sunak has just said he'll do whatever it takes to have his way. There are a few on that list that would be worrying if we pull out, including liberty, fair trial and privacy. Not only will asylum seekers get sent where the government wants, but they might have full access to our bank accounts!

It's amazing how you can make a country safe just by voting it safe. They should do that for the streets of Britain. :)

Sir Kier not happy as 56 MPs defied him including 10 front benchers and voted with SNP.

I've just found out, all the times a teacher gave me a whack at school, he was in breach of the ECHR, bit late finding out now!

I think Sunak's making a knee-jerk reaction to yesterday's judgement. Barring scrapping the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, I can't see how he's going to stop further and more complex legal challenges to the Rwanda plan, and he's barely got a year to do it.

That image captures the vulnerable and disadvantaged in society, and only scratches the surface.

One example is the homeless people in this country sometimes rely on other international laws like ECHR as a safety net. Amnesty International and Liberty being the intermediaries.

It makes you wonder what else aside from illegal migration the UK government is up to !!!

I think this government is one of the worst in the world for Human Rights. And it's sad because the public generally do not agree with their policy making.

Looks like the "Labour revolt" over the Gazan ceasefire proposal hasn't made any difference to Starmer's odds for next PM or Labour's odds for winning a majority at the next GE.

Yup. Would be more worried about how easy it will will be for him to form a stable gov (if labour win) given how easy it was to split his front bench over what should have been a no brainer.

Which I suppose feeds into the next UK General Election thread - oh joy !

Starmer would struggle to cock-up his election advantage to the same extent as the Tories even if he tried!

"Stable gov" seems like a long-lost ideal. But Starmer seems unworried. Maybe he has dumped people he didn't want anyway.

It would be rather strange to pull out of the ECHR however that does not mean it cannot be considered and it also sends a message to Strasbourg or wherever that it does need to meet the needs of its signatories. I would suspect that if the UK did pull out it would lead to others leaving and it's possible collapse.

When it was written it was in the wake of world war where some pretty horrific things happened. Unfortunately in the UK and elsewhere it has degenerated into being used over what would be regarded as trivial when it was written. Ironically in areas like Ukraine and Israel/Gaza where there are far more serious issues it seems to be ineffectual.

In all honesty the number coming by small boats is relatively trivial however it does undermine our ability to control our borders and renders border controls etc. irrelevant. It causes anger amongst many people and perhaps more importantly creates a situation where vulnerable people are being exploited by criminal gangs to put their lives at risk to escape from France.

We have a moral, and probably legal duty to ensure they are safe. How and where we do that is our decision. I would also suggest that some EU countries would also follow suit. The ideal outcome would be that it deters people putting their lives at risk and indeed putting the lives of rescuers at risk. I would really question why people are so desperate to leave France. Maybe their treatment of migrants leave something to be desired?

Human Rights barrister, Geffory Robinson QC, says there's no basis for emergency legislation as the only emergency is in the cabinet room.

He goes on to say that after government lawyers spent millions on the case, the Supreme Court assessed all the evidence and unanimously agreed that Rwanda is unsafe, Sunak is legislating a lie, which will make him a laughingstock. We could stop the boats tomorrow if we had an agreement with France, but the Rwanda plan is dead in the water. :D

The latest I've heard is that Sunak thinks he can do it without leaving the ECHR!

We can’t have an agreement with France. Macron already said so back then n the summer when Sunak visited him. Macron said the agreement would need to be with the EU members and unlikely to be agreed. The same reason why Italy cant deport their immigrants. What happens is Italy just asks for and gets more money from the EU to house and support them.

We left the EU so on that issue we fucked. It’s not in France’s interest to stop them or take them back.

France is no friend of the UK, never has been. We saw evidence of that during the Falklands war. Don’t know why everyone keeps going on about it. We should never of helped them during WW2.
