Hi All,
I live in the Brighton area and have a reputedly fast fibre opic connection via Virgin Media...
This is expensive! but worse it is horrendously unreliable... at least 3 times last week after around 4pm it became impossible to trade, because it constantly drops the connection sometimes for 20/30 seconds, ie BA just stalls... and then runs very slowly in staccato fashion... I have read the virgin media forums and its full of this problem being mentioned...
Q Does anybody else have this problem either in the southeast or elsewhere?
Q Has anybody any experience of the new BT infinty 40mg high speed fibre opic service? I beleive this is only available in certain areas of the uk so far!
Any comment would be appreciated?
Luck to all,
Groovy

Hi Groovy,
I too live in East Sussex; my broadband is supplied by BT and I have also noticed exactly the same symptoms as you.
I ran the bet angel diagnostics and sent the results to support, but all was normal as far as the operation of BA is concerned.
I live in a relatively rural area and the broadband speed has never been great at the best of times. There has recently been a development of high-end houses a little further up the lane and I have suspected that the new residents are all using TV on demand through broadband, and such like, and therefore using up all the bandwidth.
Maybe its the same for you; if it happens after 4pm, the kids are getting home and putting on the TV and computers.
I'm just speculating at the moment, but very soon I will have to do something about it because, like you, it is seriously inhibiting my trading.
All the best,
Sunnyclimes

I have been pulling my hair out for nearly a year now.
I get slow speeds at times but, far worse is loss of connection. It dropped out more than once ever day last week and cost me money. The weekend I was lucky it kept running all afternoon but went off in the evening. I had an engineer out today he clean a few wires up and got me a good speed 20 minutes after he left it dropped out again and the speed has been falling all day. Openreach just want to do work that they can charge for. All any one wants to talk about is my connection which has been replaced many times this year. They don't want to talk abot the 1 1/2 miles of cable from the exchange that is 50 years old. I live in kings lynn norfolk and my supplier is talktalk. However, the problem lies with openreach.

Your connection might be being throttled due to high usage - Virgin do this with some supposedly 'unlimited' packages (although not their most expensive ones). Have you considered a cable connection?
I'm with Sky. They assure me they don't throttle connections for high usage, although sometimes my connection seems to cut out for a couple of seconds (a few times a day, I'd say).

Hi Groovy,
If you go to http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search and put in your postcode or telephone number it will tell you what exchange you are connected to and it will then tell you if you can get BT infinity etc.
TBH though you don't actually need a connection that fast the thing that really makes a difference is the "ping" (measures the time it takes to go from PC to the destination), now although download speed will have a bearing on the ping it is not everything.
I for instance can only get speeds of 2meg and have a ping of around 20 on my connection, yet my friend has a 6 meg connection and his ping was 50 so to get to the same destination it was taking his PC 2.5times as long as mine.

Hi
Could I ask how you distribute the internet in your home/office? I always advise people to check their router (if they use one) because they can overheat and then they can stall or sleep. I am not saying this is your problem but it is worth checking.
As already mentioned, your download speed isn't the critical factor, it is the response time i.e. Ping. If you visit http://www.pingtest.net it will allow you to check your Ping and Jitter. There should also be a link that allows you to share your results.
I had real issues with Virgin but a lot of it was vandalism of the local distribution cab. Fingers crossed that seems to have stopped.
I just ran some quick checks and it appears Brighton has just about every service you can think of. Visit this site http://www.comparebroadband.co.uk/ and enter your postcode or number.
