I'm looking to buy a new flatscreen TV, but was hoping to be able to plug my laptop into the TV for a different look from time to time

Does anyone know what cables are needed and whether performance is affected?

I should buy a HDMI cable, but please check that your laptop has a HDMI way out ;)

a lot of flat screen TVs now have a VGA input, the normal old type blue tipped connection that all monitors used, and from what I have seen most laptops have the same type of connection. So what you will need is a VGA to VGA cable.

I believe you are maybe confused?

I'm no expert, but just to clear things up, we are both right in some way. If you only want to give trading a go in your tv you'll do ok with the vga cable, but if you want to watch a movie, a video or listen to music and specially if you want to watch hd contents, you should stick to the hdmi cable, that is somewhat expensive for a cable, I must add!

The best way to go is HDMI. The VGA will display a picture but it will be of a lesser quality than HDMI......IF you have an HDMI connection available on your laptop.

The other benefit of HDMI is it will include the sound so you will get audio prompts from Bet Angel and sound from a movie or music clip.

Sometimes the laptop will not output the sound and only a picture is seen. To resolve it simply right click on the speaker icon in the system tray and choose Playback devices. Select HDMI and then the sound will also work.

I concur, HDMI lead is the way to go, quality is A1. Often watch the 3pm saturday games via HDMI lead on the big Sony jobby and the picture and sound is superb.

You also don't need to spend a lot of money on a lead either.

Have a look at this from Amazon HDMI Lead

If its for trading i actually found that the TV is not great for trading. I felt i had to sit to far back and didn't feel comfortable. I tried on a 42 inch and went back to a 22inch monitor and a crappy old block for the live pics. I guess its all personal preference though.
