Military personnel with children in private schools considering quitting the forces over VAT rise. The things you need to think of before raising VAT.

To be fair, she was warned about that by the current/previous head of the armed forces. But the current one made the argument in a very politically polite manner.

Whats more worrying is that a recent survey of 3,500 16 to 19 year olds suggested that joining the UK armed forces was either last or not on their list of career options. They preferred IT, Finance, AI, Automation or Gaming.

The UK armed forces size has decreased by 32% between 2000 and 2024. And its dropped by 4,600 personnel between 2023 and 2024. Estimates suggest it will drop by a further 7,300 between 2024 and 2025 even taking into account new intake.

I served in the Navy. All peace time. Skills for life. Experiences and friends for life. Got paid to go skiing multiple times amongst other cool stuff. I learned how to move somewhere miles away from anyone I know and start a whole new life and non military friends multiple times over. That was probably the most important life skill I gained. Best decision I ever made to join. Equally glad I left, in the end having no control over my life became too much! In my opinion, the vast majority of 18-30 year olds would find the military +EV.

That said, ask someone in the Army who served in Ireland/ Iraq/ Afghan etc they might have a different opinion.

Given the figures this morning for the UK, Major supermarkets saying the budget is potentially a disaster plus farmers in the last chance saloon, then it doesn’t bode well for Labour. And if they have to dig deep on defence, it’s going to be very painful over there.
