Militant French farmers are offering to show their British counterparts how it’s done as they take to the streets over the Government’s inheritance tax raid.

Brilliant line from J Clarkson on BBC news there...
"I didn't buy land to avoid inheritance tax, I bought it to go shooting. It also had the benefit of avoiding some inheritance tax but that is not why I bought it... Get you facts right BBC!"

From what I have read, it’s very easy to work out if farmland has been bought to run a farm or been bought for IT purposes.
So why don’t they just go after the people, companies who own farmland but with no farming activities ?
When I was in the UK it was very difficult to find land to shoot over. Allot of land was bought by companies and charge shooters £3,000 per year for the privilege. I had a mate who owned a farm and would ring me literally every week to shoot foxes, rates and others for free.
I have no doubt there has been a big scam going on for years regarding land and IT.
But that’s no reason to go after real farmers. Back when Covid happened, didn’t all the experts say that the UK needed to produce far more meat and dairy ?

The BBC are saying it will affect 500 farms (of 210,000) and even those nominally affected could swerve some or all of the tax due to passing on the main residence and other rebates for other assets like machinery.
Still don't think its worth pursuing. Looking more and more like idealogical revenge on the rich. That's poor IMO. Black mark. Must try harder!

1. Remove the winter fuel payment: Then encourage everyone to apply for pension credit who is eligible. The number now likely to receive it has increased by 173%. Which means the original savings have been wiped out by 60%.
2. Introduce 20% IT for farms worth over £1 million: Most, not all, produce food and dairy for everyone. Decrease that, then you need to import more. Exporters will figure out that the UK needs us more than we need them, therefore we put a premium on what the UK pays for our overseas produce. Then, you guessed it, adds to inflation.
3. Increase living wage and Employer NI contributions: Erm, private sector pay stagnates, less tax and NI, less likely to hire people, more likely to make jobs redundant, more people on benefits. Even the Governor of the BOE has said it could lead to much higher unemployment.
I can understand trying to tax the super rich but they use PwC and others to makesure they pay nil or next to nothing. o and apparently PwC advise over 400 UK serving MP's on their tax affairs. That means some at least must be Labour. Isn't that the "The pot calling the kettle black"
Are Formula 1 drivers taxed in each country where they race or where they reside. The top 10% live in Monaco, tax free haven. No tax Sir. Lewes Hamilton earns £43 million per annum, has done for many years, he doesnt pay any tax, even when he races in the UK. Does that sound fair ?

Most of the big land owners have their land in trusts, usually held overseas and ownership / beneficiaries often opaque.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 6:50 pm

It really doesn't take rocket science to identify that as potential massive (tax avoidance) issue.
PS: you could also buy land with "forestry" on it as a means to avoid inheritance tax (and go shooting), but that has been caught up under this taxation as well.

Yeah I have a friend back in the UK who bought 1,000 hectares of land for the purpose of avoiding IT. His accountancy firm told him to get some Llama‘s on it asap. Using that loophole he managed to build a home on it without the red tape planning permissions. He since sold it at 3 times what he paid for it and paid fuck all tax legally.sionascaig wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 11:50 pmMost of the big land owners have their land in trusts, usually held overseas and ownership / beneficiaries often opaque.Archery1969 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 6:50 pm

But that’s the problem, as soon as stuff is announced in budgets, accountancy firms always find a loophole.
Makes you think, why doesn’t the treasury employ people who are the best. Probably down to costs and salaries. But long term they might be better off paying the £ for knowledgeable staff in the first place etc.
I know PwC have 1 person who advises the Sultan of Brunei on tax affairs. He owns Hotels, bars, clubs, cars and land in 85 countries. That 1 person knows how to make sure he legally has a worldwide tax bill next to peanuts in comparison. Don’t know how much she earns but it must be allot of dosh. Always one step ahead of 85 countries treasury’s.
If 1. is true then isn't that a good thing? 2 and 3, I'm inclined to agree these are not why I voted for them.
But finally anyone that lives in Monaco pays vast, vast sums just to be there. Ok it doesn't contribute to the UK but he doesn't live here. So......???
I am watching Labour more and ore closely.
I think renegotiating trade with the EU is long overdue. Tradewise Brexit has been like dragging an anchor for us from before it happened.

Labour claim to be on the side of the poor but have voted to keep the two child benefit, voted to remove the winter fuel allowance, voted for starters and now launched an astonishing attack on British farmers and UK food security.greenmark wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 12:47 amIf 1. is true then isn't that a good thing? When you tax the rich the poor indirectly pay. Retailers have told the government higher prices and job losses are inevitable. Today it's reported 50,000 more pensioners will be pushed into poverty next year as a result of Labour policy. VAT on private schools is another one the rich will pay it no problem the people who it will effect it those parents who aren't rich and proper graft just to put they're kids in private school to give them a better chance in life.
It's deffo a delicate balancing act but the issue I have is they always attack British people 1st, why are we sending billions to Africa for climate change, billions in foreign aid why do British people have to pay all the time. The 1st place to get money form should be our money being sent abroad. Time to put British people 1st it is our money after all not Governments to spaff on foreign country's, if there's money left after British people are sorted I have no issue sending it.
Imagine going to work and come home and your lass has sent most of your money to India (5th biggest economy in the world) and your house is cold and there's beans and toast with no butter for tea, you wouldn't be happy would you.
I know foreign aid does winnd up a lot of people. But for example gdp per capita in india is $2500, uk $49000.Michael5482 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 8:41 amLabour claim to be on the side of the poor but have voted to keep the two child benefit, voted to remove the winter fuel allowance, voted for starters and now launched an astonishing attack on British farmers and UK food security.greenmark wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 12:47 amIf 1. is true then isn't that a good thing? There is a school of thought that th developed nations keep the developing nations poor.
But i guess we have to accept that poor countries are run by corrupt people that cream off as much they can for themselves and their pals.
So its very difficult to change that equation.
Shouldn't stop us tryiing IMO.

I could have more sympathy for India as a deserving nation of our generosity if they didn't choose a space program over the welfare of their people!
I know what you mean, but I've always thought India is one hell of challenge to manage. China does it with very strict rules and a one party state.firlandsfarm wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2024 10:26 amI could have more sympathy for India as a deserving nation of our generosity if they didn't choose a space program over the welfare of their people!
At least India is a democracy but a mate of (2nd generation indian immigrant) told me in IndIa corruption is rife in most areas. With that here is little chance of real growth.
