This is total speculation on my part, but I wonder if Betfair AU have been hit with a fine or an order from the NTRC and have been a bit blindsided by it.

All other Australian bookmakers (certainly all the majors) have geo blocking software and VPN detection and will stop you from logging in if you are using a VPN. Betfair in the past have generally ignored AU customers who use a VPN/VPS to circumvent in play restrictions, and according to a previous poster, actively encourage you in finding ways to circumvent the law. If I was a bookmaker I'd be suitably pissed that I was being forced to comply with a law that BF customers were openly flouting.

I speculate that they have cut VPS/VPN access while they assess their legal obligations. And I think it may well have been a competitor that dobbed them in.

Will remove my tinfoil hat now!
Probably because it's in the terms and conditions of softbooks like Sportsbet that they can close anyone's account if they have used a VPN on their site.

Much more profitable to allow a person to use their site with a VPN while their losing money, and then in the event that they have a big win, just close their account and seize all their money.

Betfair wouldn't benefit as much by doing this, as it would have a trickle-on effect of reducing the liquidity in the market, and then reduce the customer satisfaction of everyone else.

Hi there,
I contacted betfair a while ago like a noob asking how to get around the inplay limitations for australian sport markets and they said there was no option, which I have to believe is a lie, coz whenever I'm at sporting events i will watch the odds on my phone and they change absolutely instantly.

I've read the above and am a little confused, for clarification... If you log into bet angel with a VPN off, and then turn it on once you have loaded bet angel, you can bet live? or is it the other way around.

Would welcome any help and advice to be able to in play trade from Australia using the bet angel software.

Cheers

Just this morning, when I was placing a bet, I noticed it changed to

"The following bet(s) could not be placed: Most likely this is due to you being located in a country where we currently can't offer our services. If you have questions please contact our Helpdesk at [email protected]."

But just a few hours ago, I was still able to place a bet successfully.
Is everyone else experiencing the same situation? I'm clearly still using a VPN, and I've already tried switching to several different ones.

Betfair reserves the right to close or restrict any customer account at any time, under part B, section 7 of the customer Terms and Conditions:

“Either we or you may suspend or terminate your account at any time, either with or without cause, upon notice”

Please note, that this restriction will not be removed, and the decision is final.

If this is Betfair AU, sadly there is nothing you can do.

They have a blanket policy of never reopening closed accounts for any reason. Lawsuits and regulatory crackdowns are the reason.

Only thing I can suggest is a white label such as Orbit or whoever is doing the rounds now. No in play restrictions on them, unless it has changed recently. Downside is no API.

(Sorry BA mods, have an old account but can't remember it so I had to start a new one)

Hi peeps, interested to hear if there are any people here who has multiple accounts, say one in the UK and one in Aus? I lived in both countries and now settled in one, but both accounts still active. Would there be any legal implications if I used both? I read up quite a bit but cannot find anywhere on BF site talking about it. I do not want to do anything that will have both my accounts closed. Interested to hear if anyone had any experience with this. Thanks guys.

Multiple accounts aren't permitted so you'd be running a huge risk. I don't know if they typically close both accounts upon discovery, but Betfair Australia is being particularly ruthless with account closures in recent times so it's not something I'd personally risk.
