Not sure if anyone uses one of these routers? The Draytek Vigor's, I have the 2820n one and am trying to setup up a VPN for it. I have followed the online guides all morning and no matter what I do I can't get the bloody thing to work - anyone got any tips?

TIA.

I have one of these Andy, what is the problem you are having?

PS. I mean where does it all stop or where/what is the error you are getting?

HI JG. I finally got it to log in using the username and PW I setup but then got an error. I have it all on my other PC so will have to wait until racing is over to give the exact error code.

Although it logged in it didnt connect. Will let you know in a bit. I am trying to set it up so I can do it on my parents router which is the same so that when my father is away on business trips he can use it to access Iplayer etc.

It can be an issue if you don't have a static IP address. You can overcome this by using a Hostname instead of an IP address; most ISPs charge for a static IP. It may connect first up but if your IP changes (and it does occasionally) you will not be able to connect.

A couple of things to check.

1. Have you selected your preferred protcool? PPTP IPSEC or L2TP are your choices. I used PPTP but then must also use MPPE encryption or the connection is not totally secure. I switched to IPSEC which uses AES encryption and works just fine.
2. Check your firewall. It is common for the transfer of data to be blocked by the firewall. This will vary according to which firewall you use - let me know yours and I'll try and get my head round it!

Good choice of router thought mate :P

Well I went down stairs to test it and went to log in and got Error 800. So I tried again and it worked :o

Checked the IP and it was showing as connecting correctly through the VPN.

Thought I would give it another go so disconnected and re-connected and now all I get is Error 721 which I think is some how Firewall related....

Do you have to change anything on the Ports for the router or anything on the router's firewall?

PS the reason I got the router was on your recommendation JG ;) My parents needed a new one so got them one as well so that when things go wrong I can tell them over the phone what to do as we now have the same setup.

Now it has decided to connect again - can't say I am doing anything different each time. Not exactly reliable....

Take a look at this guide for IPSEC setup. It also shows the Firewall in windows and how to adjust it. This is designed for Vista but it should help.

Don't forget that it may connect now but if your Father is away from home and his home IP changes then it will fail again.

You can setup a FREE hostname here http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-free/

Cheers for the links JG - will let you know how I get on. The IP changing isnt the issue and shouldn't be when he is away as I have done the thing where it finds it automatically.

All sorted now. Thanks for your help JG. Not a clue why it wasn't working this morning.

I have set one up on my router for my use when abroad as TV in hotels is usually rubbish and also one for my father (I also use a Slingbox and take a SlingCatcher so it is displayed on the hotel TV and you have a remote just like you would at home).

Just remember to open the necessary ports on the Port Forwarding section of the Draytek. I forgot this one time and then the SlingBox wouldn't work

The Slingbox works fine - took a while figuring out how to set it up but eventually got it up and working.

Just check the ports though because if you test it on your LAN it will be fine but the external port will not be open when you VPN or use another network.

Yeah I did all the ports. I have used it a few times over the last 6 months when abroad and it all worked fine when accessing it via my laptop or using the Slingcatcher.

I have to say though they don't make it overly user friendly to setup.

If it all goes tits up try overplay.net or the comp at home isnt turned on. Its about 6 quid a month and works fine. With Itv player and sky tv you can kill the connection once you have started it running which tends to work better in my opinion.
