Fergie signed Christiano Ronaldo in 2003 for £12 million. In his first few seasons, he did plenty of fancy tricks, but was often wasteful and didn't score many goals. In 2009, he left in a deal worth £80 million, and was one of the top 5 players in the world.
More recently, he bought Chicharito for £6 million. It's ironic that Liverpool bought a £6 million striker (Carroll) for £35 million, and Man U bought a £35 million striker for £6 million!

When someone keeps getting lucky like that, it probably ain't luck!

If Fergie were a horse trainer, he'd specialise in finding horses with hidden potential but little success, buy them for next to nothing, and then nurture them to Grade 1 victories!
