Fergie signed Christiano Ronaldo in 2003 for £12 million. In his first few seasons, he did plenty of fancy tricks, but was often wasteful and didn't score many goals. In 2009, he left in a deal worth £80 million, and was one of the top 5 players in the world.

More recently, he bought Chicharito for £6 million. It's ironic that Liverpool bought a £6 million striker (Carroll) for £35 million, and Man U bought a £35 million striker for £6 million! :lol:

When someone keeps getting lucky like that, it probably ain't luck! ;)

If Fergie were a horse trainer, he'd specialise in finding horses with hidden potential but little success, buy them for next to nothing, and then nurture them to Grade 1 victories!

Who chose to buy Andy Cole and many other useless players - Ferguson. Making so many bad decisions is why I don't think MU's success is down to Ferguson.

Just think how more pleasant life would be if Crystal Palace had won the Cup in 1990. Ferguson would have been sacked and all this bullshit would not be on TV.

Cole scored 93 goals in 195 appearances for United! He and Dwight Yorke formed an awesome strike partnership!

Do you really think that Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have not bought their Premier League titles.

There is more money in football since the Premier League arrived - before that the league title usually changed hands each year.

Do you really think that things will go back to this when Alex Ferguson retires. I don't think anyone outside the big spenders will win the league ever again. Not in my lifetime...

Nice attempt to shift the goalposts, but we're talking about his performance for United! :)

And there are very few top flight English players who you could describe as other than useless if you're judging them solely on their performance in an England shirt! :lol: When you look at how some of England's lads play for their clubs, on paper we should be one of the top teams in the world. Yet last year in the World Cup, we drew 0-0 bagainst Algeria, when we had players capable of making it 3-0 by half time! :evil:

Glenn Hoddle said based on his performances for Manchester United, I won't be taking Andy Cole to the 1998 World Cup, as he needs 7 chances to score one goal. We don't have that many opportunities available in International Football.

In the 1997-8 season, Cole scored 15 goals in 33 games.

Let's look at the guys who did make the squad. Shearer had scored 2 in 17, Sheringham 9 in 31, Paul Merson 12 in 45, Les Ferdinand 5 in 21, Owen 18 in 30.

So on recent club form, the strike partnership should have been Owen and Cole...

I think he did, actually. Not only is he a highly talented player, displaying a zen-like calm in the heat of the battle, but he was one of the few players who always worked his ass off for England!

And I don't think Real Madrid and AC Milan employed him for his looks alone! :lol:

That said, Beckham never reached his potential IMHO. I blame Posh - I get the impression that, before she came along and got him into modelling and appearing on chat shows, all Becks was interested in was football...

Possibly the best goalscorer England have ever had, scoring against the might of Columbia, Finland, Greece (x2), Slovakia, Macedonia (x2), Liechtenstein, Turkey, Croatia, Ukraine, Wales, Azerbaijan, Ecuador and then the fantastic penalty against Argentina where the goalkeeper would have saved it if he hadn't have moved.

You're forgetting that belter he scored against Greece...

He's a wide midfielder, so you can't really blame him for not scoring loads of goals. As long as he tees up opportunities, he's doing his job. And I seem to remember Van Nistlerooy putting a few away when Becks was whipping them in for him...

OK, he miskicked a penalty. So have lots of great players...
