Agree, you've just got to keep working hard... but realize that takes a lot of effort & frustration, so are you prepared to do that? 'crazy' depends on the difference between cost and value. But that headline price probably has more to do with legitimising receipts the taxman can see rather than expecting many takers.
The problem with this job is you're technically unemployed with zero income, the taxman won't recognise it. So for the sake of credit/finance some people choose to 'creatively' have another income stream they can use to get a mortage. 40k just means you have to fake fewer invoices than saying it's 400 quid.
