Windows Updates!
I warn everyone to leave this Windows 11 version 24H2 alone, avoid it at all costs, just wait a few more months. This update was shoddily put together and has numerous bugs which they are sorting out.
I reckon the major problems will be sorted around February- March, but do not risk it on a trading machine until then.
The unfortunate downside is anyone thinking of upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11, it is reported that Microsoft are going to charge for this from next year.

Just as a matter of interest would it not be best to use a VPS for the sake of a few £'s/$'s/€'s per month?
I do them late on a Tuesday when i've wrapped up (they're normally downloadable from about 9pm); so i just let the PCs do their their thing, knowing all will be (cross fingers) ok for the start on Wednesday, without them trying to do stuff in the background.

My PCs are working 24/7. So I kind of have to nurse them all through their updates manually as quickly as possible to get things up and running again.
I hate it.
Same issue, I did my SQL Server instance which feeds my football automation yesterday, purely as it updated in background and threw an error saying I had two admins logged in.jamesedwards wrote: ↑Wed Jul 09, 2025 8:48 pm

Am still on Win10 as am loathe to migrate to Win11, more from the fact my main machine I do use as general purpose with music production stuff on it and some of what I have breaks on Win11.
Set windows updates to just download and not automatically run - you can then run the updates at your leisure or when they have few events eg Sunday AMjamesedwards wrote: ↑Wed Jul 09, 2025 8:48 pm

For servers I don't update for months on the basis they do nothing else so won't "catch" a virus - that means no browser / cookie / file storage usage allowed at all from that machine ! With access fully hardened and everything unnecessary turned off only way in would be to crack password (only possible if not set up to use your local static IP - statics available on VPN if not wanted locally) or break MS network protocols. I apply same philosophy if using local PC's purely for BA/BF.

Warning!
For some reason, this month Windows has ignored my metered connection settings and has downloaded monthly updates without waiting for my prompt. Some of my devices were sat awaiting restart this morning, and some have restarted themselves overnight.

Same again this month. It seems the 'metered connection' hack no longer works to prevent your PC from restarting without authorisation.jamesedwards wrote: ↑Thu Aug 14, 2025 12:18 pmWarning!

I've discovered there is an option buried away under Windows Update > Advanced Options > Delivery Optimisation that allows update downloads to be shared around from other devices on your network. Perhaps this is how Windows is getting around the metered connection block? I've disabled this option on all my PCs. Will see what happens next month...jamesedwards wrote: ↑Wed Sep 10, 2025 11:11 amSame again this month. I'd like to ask a question on this thread as you'll seem very high level.
My desktop i use runs windows 10 and i do use Windows 11 on a laptop i have but personally i hate it. As you are all aware Windows 10 is been "Not Supported" in mid October so reluctantly i have no choice but to upgrade.
So my question do you update your Windows 11 as soon as an update becomes available or "hang back" and only install the larger updates?

I have a similar issue, I haven't decided what to do yet. My PC was made by Multiple Monitors 10 years ago. It has been incredible, but I can't download Windows 11 as my CPU isn't compatible.buyshirts wrote: ↑Thu Sep 11, 2025 9:26 amI'd like to ask a question on this thread as you'll seem very high level.
