Closing/Greening Up

Has anyone got any advice or examples of a robust closing automation before the off. Essentially I am just looking for something that closes trades (preferably green where available). I am aware of the automation options but I have had a few issues with the odd race not firing as expected. Any advice on creating a fail safe appreciated.
