Sounds like he has been banned for 12 days but only on Amateur days so can ride Long Run in the King George on Boxing Day - does it not follow that he should also be done for trying to mislead the stewards now?

I guess he knew he was in trouble and could miss a key ride. Sounds like a compromise to me!

I don't think they have compromised as I think any Amateur ban only applies on Amateur days so they have done as they should.

I don't think Sam realised the above though when telling his porkies.

What the ban for misleading is though I don't know...

I can see the logic I think of the rule that he is only banned on Amateur days.

Most Amateurs wont ride in other races, so if the ban applied to all racing the ban would be over and done with very quickly and perhaps might mean they miss no actual Amateur races.

What I think it should be is that it applies to Amateur races but they also can't ride in any other races during this period.

I sympathise with him (a few jockies get misled like that at Fakenham) but he quite rightly got a ban as he clearly finished a circuit early.
He pushed the horse out past the line and was looking around for other horses so there is no way he was pulling the horse up - should also get a bigger ban for telling porkies to the stewards imo.

I felt a bit sorry for him until he came on with his excuses. A bigger man would have admitted he made a mistake and said sorry. I think he was trying to cover his ass and avoid missing boxing day. He said he would take the ban on the chin - I doubt he would have done if it meant missing Long Run!

He will long be remembered in my mind as a liar who tried to deceive.

+1. he's embarrassed fair enough, but lying will do far more damage to his reputation in the end (whether he realises it or not).

agreed, he's gone from making a genuine mistake to severely tarnishing his reputation.
