I just read some rumours that on the new year it will be illegal to take an make live bets in Spain. I googled it, but found nothing. Does anyone know what's happening?

If it's true, these are really bad news to betfair, just hope these acts don't come across the border...

You'll have to change your plans, Frank.

As far as I can understand, Betfair will be a bookie in Spain, maybe in the same model it has in Italy?

Coudn't find any thing else, maybe someone from Spain can help?

tbh i'll probably be done with BF trading by then (at this rate we all will be).

i don't know why these countries have such hangups about exchange betting. is it just to protect their own bookies/totes etc.?

In Italy it might be impossible to access the betfair website but it is possible to trade from there using betangel with the API (no need for VPS etc) so might be the same with Spain?

I live in Italy, access the Betfair website and trade using Bet Angel in API mode most days. I did get blocked from Betfair a few times earlier in the year, presumably due to the well publicised court case they have had with the Italian gambling regulator AAMS. I contacted [email protected] who gave me a different web address for existing Italian residents but advised at that time they were unable to open any new accounts. I am now able to access the usual Betfair web address again without any problems and suggest you email them in the hope they can assist with your potential problem in Spain.

Frank
If your betfair account is domiciled in the UK..and you have a UK VPS, you should be able to carry on as normal ??

Spoke to Betfair today about this and the situation is a little unclear and it's difficult to comment authoritatively until there is some clarification from the regulator in Spain.

If you are UK based or have an account outside of Spain but are based in Spain then a VPS should do the trick whatever happens.

As hgodden says, usually they only block the betfair site and not the API. For me its also the same here in Thailand although recently some Internet Providers seem to have avoided blocking the main website where as most IP do block access to the website.

Spain’s new online gambling regulatory system, originally scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2012, has been delayed until possibly as late as July 1. On Dec. 30, Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) announced that the new scheme would be delayed six months or until regulators issue their first license, whichever comes first. The first round of licenses was supposed to be issued Dec. 20, but the date came and went with no licenses being left under operators’ Christmas trees. Clearly, the shift from a free and open market to a tightly controlled system is throwing up unforeseen problems behind the scenes. The delay means that unlicensed operators will possibly have another six months to serve their Spanish customers, and Spanish poker players will have six more months of unrestricted options.
