Reducing brightness on monitor

Greetings all,

Many of us who spend many hours staring at a monitor screen day after day must be doing some damage to our eyes.

I find that I have increasing difficulty with the brightness levels on my monitor. I have tried all sorts of adjustments but to little avail. The best I have used so far is a free program called "Desktop lighter" which reduces the black and white mixture a bit.

However, that is not perfect. Does anyone have any tricks that I might be able to use? I am increasing my night trading (I am in Australia and that means trading the UK markets at night!) and the screen problem is even worse at night.

I am using W7.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi G
I can't help you specifically but I understand your problem.
I had the same situation on my Macbook which has two LED back lit displays.. Even at the lowest setting i still found it a slight strain on the eyes especially at night. I installed a free program called Shades (freeware)
It's brilliant and allows me to adjust both screens independently. As I say I can't help you for your PC but there must be similar software for windows>?? Worth scouting around
regards

you could try placing a normal lamp 3 or 4 feet to the side of your monitor, this sometimes helps in cutting out glare, and reducing the apparent brightness (similar effect as with tv set).

you can also go to an optician and have a pair of anti glare vdu glasses made either in plain glass or to your existing prescription, which can help reduce the effects of glare causing eye strain.

if you have been sitting staring at a screen for several hours you really should break at least every couple hours of for 10 to 15 minutes and let your eyes focus on other things, don't look at a monitor or tv.

Thanks to both peterLe and to75ne for your responses.

I will try rearranging the lamps in the room (which incidentally, I had built as an add-on to the house so I attempted to place the lighting so that it would produce the recommended "ambient background").

I will test the Shades program and will certainly talk to the optometrist about the special glasses.

I do take a break when I'm trading during the day - usually go for a walk around the garden to refresh, but at night, there is a tendency to just keep plugging away.

thanks again.

cheers

Hi

I also found this to be a problem and so many years ago I bought a great piece of equipment called a Spyder

It isn't cheap   However, I took the view....forgive the pun...that I spent many hours staring at the display and I only have one pair of eyes. The Spyder device sets the correct brightness, contrast and colour levels on your monitor and I am delighted with mine. I bought an earlier unit at a knockdown price when a new version was released. I am sure there will a distributor in Australia so shop around online and see if you can find a Spyder 3 rather than the latest Spyder 4.

Thanks for that JG - I will certainly see if I can get hold of a Spyder 3 - the cost doesn't matter as if I keep going as I am I won't be able to trade in a couple of years!!!

BTW - PeterLe - I just doscovered that the Shades program only applied to Mac - thanks for your response anyway.

If you cannot find one in OZ then I can search here in the UK. It would then be a case of posting it out to you and we can sort payment privately.

Let me know if that would help

You could also try the following

The last one even seems to account for your location

You beat me to it JG.

Flux featured on BBC's Click Technology program a while back but I was only catching up on a heap of them over the weekend that I had Sky+'d.

Not sure if you can view it in Oz but here is the link to the clip about Flux:

Thanks to everybody for those contributions - I'll try f.lux and report back on the effect of that on the health of my eyes.

Once again, this has been a great indication of the friendliness of the contributors to this forum.

A plea for help!!

My technological limits are exceeded fairly quickly - in fact, some days that feeling seems to strike me just after I have turned the computer on!!!

However, every time I download f.lux my antivirus program (CA) keeps telling me that it is infected with a malware called Win 32/DownloadN/Exec_im.It blocks the program from being installed.

So . . . i went to cnet which has a good reputation for downloads that are clean, and it downloads a compressed file which I can't open because it keeps telling me that there is an encryption problem.

Anyone have any good ideas?

And I have just realised that it is Friday 13th (already here)
Thanks

Hi G66. Important: Do a restore point save ( go to Start and find the blue Help and Support icon and type in restore ) and a backup before you install anything. If you are satisfied downloaded program was from a safe reputable site check the settings on CA and disable antivirus during install. This is an often recommended procedure when installing software. The blocking of installing of software is one of the design purposes of a quality antivirus. Re: software downloaded from CNET, check that you have not downloaded MAC version software - not your required Win7.

G'day RG,
Thanks for that - I'll try that and see how I go.

How is the trading treating you?

I was thinking that perhaps you and I and another trader I meet with fairly regularly might have a hook up via Skype one day if you're interested.

Aargghhh!!!

Sorry G, I was awake at around 02:30 UK time and posted a reply for you but I was in considerable pain and not thinking straight.........I forgot to click the SUBMIT button.

I am certain your AV software is giving a false positive. I downloaded F.Lux and checked it out with ESET. There was nothing found and it is completely safe.

If you are ever unsure about a file then use Virus Total This will scan a file with multiple AV engines.

Here is the report for f.lux.

Virus Total f.lux scan

You can even submit a URL if you think a website is dubious.
