Hi All,

Quick question for those of you who trade the Aussie markets...I don't have any money in the Aussie wallet but I'm doing okay (i.e. I haven't bankrupt myself yet.!) with a simple bot on the UK & Irish racing and I was wondering what kind of volume is traded pre-off on the Aussie markets. Come to think about it...what kind of volume is there on the South African, USA and UAE?

When ever I look up one of those markets just using the Betfair website is always seems that very limited amounts of money has been matched...am I missing something....?
Any advice welcome.
Thanks
Rob

If you don't have any money in your wallet and your doing okay I would just carry on doing what your doing and don't worry about liquidity!

In general they are quite thin in Ausy markets.

It really depends on the meeting, if you look to the Melbourne Cup, millions are traded, but some crapy harness races don't match more than €100.

Have a look in the metropolitan races, it's where you'll find the biggest liquidity.

I don't do SA, but the other day liquidity seemed ok €50k 5 minutes before the of, USA markets are picking up but can be dodgy and the UAE have plety liquidity. French races usually really suck!

I was trying to be general rather than pick out the biggest race of the year as I presumed your bot was for every race. It seems you know more than you originally realised as you seem to be answering your question.

The harness racing has little liquidity but the better quality meetings, as highlighted above, can produce some reasonable volume.

I think last week had an important harness race, maybe the Ballarat Cup? I didn't write down the volume, but maybe €200k? Won brilliantly by Imthemightyqueen. I think this weekend there will be another big clash with Smoken Up facing Sushi Suchi and the rest of the field is quite impressive too.

To sum up, if you don't know the racetracks you don't know what to expect, but maybe you can program a bot to have a tight staking plan according to volume?

Haha, I thought you were a football specialist Antonio?

I didn't realise you were interested in Australian Harness Racing!

You're a man of many surprises

Thanks to everyone for your posts and wisdom.

It seems that there is a very mixed bag from a volume perspective, but generally much lower than the average that we are used to in UK races. I'll put my toe in the water with low stakes and a volume & matched bets turnover filter (to make sure I'm not the only eejit trying to trade a tumbleweed market... ) and see what happens.

Cheers, Rob

Oh no, not at all LeTiss, I'm not a specialist at anbything, tbh.

Right now I only do prelive football occasionally, when one of 'those' opportunities emmerge. But I get involved a lot inplay (better liquidity and volatility).

As there isn't much action in the morning and I always get up early, I do the nags and the hounds in Aus, with nice results. Eventually you end up knowing the big stars.

My profits structure changed a lot and what's more important, I have more fun, I love volatile markets and big swings.

Also, when there is no football action in the end of the day (or when there is nothing interesting for me) I have a go in the US racing, so I can't honestly say I'm a specialist at any particular sport, specially if you consider I trade tennis occasionally and plenty of long term markets

Hi Rob. From an analytical perspective, you may well find that events can also be filtered on the basis of market efficiency. By example, you will generally find that the higher volume events in Australia will be more likely to trade closer to 100% than those events of a lesser quality which often trade around 115% and higher.

Black Caviar runs at Moonee Valley under lights tonight for her 17th consecutive win - that will improve the liquidity pretty well!

Currently 1.04 with liquidity at about 120,000 Aud.

cheers

This was taken 10 seconds before the off, this was the most 'unvolatile' market I've ever seen, absolutely dull, never got a match, although my lays were placed 12 minutes before the off.

Another run, another win to Black Caviar!

@Ruby

Thanks for that...I hadn't thought of that type of filter before (I wonder why...now that you mention it, it seems like a no brainer..! )

Hi CaerMyrddin,

I placed a trade on this race about 24 hours out and managed to get both sides filled within the last 10 minutes. I think there was 130k in front of me on the lay side and that was the last to go.

Definetly the most unvolatile market I have seen. I think right at the off there was a bit matched at 1.06!

You can expect pretty much the same next start.
