I've decided to go for this - http://store.three.co.uk/view/plan/MBBD21102011T210636

If it's a rubbish connection, all I've lost is about £20...

Decided against it - it turns out that if I go over my 5 gig limit, I'd be charged £112 per gigabyte!!! :o

I knew there had to be a catch!

It's very easy to setup a warning for the data limit. You set it at 80% and it pops up a warning for you. Unless you are going download crazy you should be fine

Thanks Dave

Let's say I ran Bet Angel for an hour on the 20 data requests per second setting. How much data would you say that would consume?

I would ask Peter or Support how much data you might use. It will be difficult to be precise because it will depend on how many markets, bets etc.

Jeff,

1 - I use Vodaphone mobile broadband and have done so for 4 years. You have to use it sparingly though. My girlfriend thought she would search for a holiday on my laptop and used up my whole month's usage in 20 minutes just surfing the internet. I usually use it only for FTP purposes (web design away from home). Anyway, my contract is quite cheap now only GBP 10.50 a month.

2 - Don't sign up for too long a deal as the phone companies can rip you off very easily.

3 - It is not slow when used with Bet Angel in emergencies. However, I would not trade for too long, as I said before you don't get much usage for your money. It's certainly worked for me as a backup. If you trade heavily and your broadband goes down, then it's quicker to get mobile broadband up and running than phoning Betfair to close your positions.

4 - All in all, it's the same price per year as Bet Angel, so therefore worth it in my opinion.

Just be careful what you sign up for.

Hi Jeff

I agree with Paul, I only use it for backup and a bit of fun when I am bored. If I am on the train I sometimes have a bit of fun trading the racing markets using small stakes.

I am on Orange and use the Option Icon 515 and it is very good. That particular modem has a better aerial so reception is better - and that is from my testing too. I also have an E173 from Orange and a similar one from Vodafone and the Icon is better IMHO. Vodafone were great but they lacked coverage where we take our UK holidays so I switched to Orange.

NEVER EVER use it abroad or the price will kill you. I once listened to part of the F1 Grand Prix when in Mallorca and it cost me £200!! After that I changed to a Euro Traveller tariff for a month (Vodafone) and it meant I had a 5gb allowance. I then cancelled it when I returned to the UK. Vodafone were excellent with this and I could not fault their product or their service.

Orange only have UK coverage.

I went for the 3 network on my iPad in the end as it seemed (at the time) to have the best reviews overall..
You can also check the coverage down to postcode and it tells you whether you will get a signal indoors and outdoors at your home...you can also check you local racetrack and football ground too by postcode
Regards
Peter

PS I was just looking on the 3 website and noticed that they had set a notice up saying that the network in my postcode area would be down for maintenance next week for a six hour stretch...something I hadn't really thought of checking before. I just use my iPad as a backup..but when I have big liabilities (such as on the football this afternoon) I must add it in to my routine to check that there is no planned downtime that day...

Thanks guys

If I go with a network that's offering HSPDA+ in my area, does that mean I'll get HSPDA+ speeds. Or do only particular models of phone cater for HSPDA+?

Thanks

At the moment only 3 offer the HSPA+ technology. It is a halfway house in terms of 4G. I think it is only their USB modems that have this technology but I am sure a quick call to 3 would clear that up.

Totally agree. I took it with us on holiday in Crete. Checked my emails once for a couple of minutes. Before finding a local cafe with broadband for 5 euros a week.

When I got home and received my bill from Vodaphone - to say I was shocked is a massive under statement. It was £18.00 for just logging on.
