Boss of football's anti-racism group is branded a racist after calling Asian fan a 'coconut'

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... z1mA6EVPNc

This morning, I tweeted Lee Jasper (former senior policy advisor on racial equality to the Major of London), to ask him if he condemned the comment. His reply:

'no I do not the term is not racially offensive it's a political point.'

Unbelievable!

It is an insult but certainly not a racist one. Just as when Muhammad Ali called Joe Frazier an 'Uncle Tom'.

Uncalled for just the same, though - and very unhelpful.

I think it depends on how you define racism. However, it's racist in the sense that it's an insult that's based, at least partly, on the colour of someone's skin. And it raises serious questions about the guy's suitability to be head of an anti-racism organisation.

imo it's gone too far all this anti-racism stuff - to the point that it is creating problems that it was designed to solve.

people will always use physical and cultural traits as insults in the heat of the moment (e.g. ginger b@stard, lanky b@stard, French tw@t). i was once called a white b@stard by a group of asian lads! - i wasn't particularly offended because i don't think that being white is a bad thing... so why should a black person get particularly offended at being called black?! that's the problem they've created - they're almost saying that being non-white is some sort of disability that shouldn't be mentioned.

Enoch Powell denied being racist because his definition of racism was believing that one race is superior to another - which he didn't - he just opposed immigration for social reasons, he didn't hate non-white people.

Suarez is no saint, but i wouldn't have shaken Evra's hand either if he'd caused me to be banned from playing for 8 games for a heat of the moment cultural exchange!

See the real evidence that Evra is the aggressor... trouble maker.

How can anyone still defend Evra...
Suarez admits to and apologises for not shaking Evra's hand:

Luis Suarez wrote:"I made a mistake and I regret what happened.

"I should have shaken Patrice Evra's hand before the game and I want to apologise for my actions."
Think that makes it pretty clear who was at fault.

Next because there's a video of it - you're be saying Armstrong stepped on the moon.

Please read between the lines mate...He was told to apologise even though Liverpool FC know he is innocent of racism.

Not everything is as it seems. Evra clearly has the body language of a trouble maker NOT a victim. He revels in being the centre of attention. Watch the video with an open mind.

In France he IS KNOWN to be a bad boy. English people are so gullible and easily lead, when it comes to racism.

Yours sincerely,

My post had nothing to do with views on the rights and wrong of racism in football or in this ongoing case. My post was only to do with who was behind the 'non handshake'. I had a very open mind behind who was behind it. At first I thought Suarez then last night after watching your link I thought it Evra then watching MOTD I thought it was a bit of neither wanted to commit to a handshake so they both were behind it.

Now I think it is very clear from the evidence that it was Suarez that was behind the non handshake. He has come out and made a statement it was he.

As for all the other stuff surrounding it I really couldn't care less. I have little interest in football as my lack of posts in this section of the forum demonstrates, only reason for today's post was that I was killing time between the two race meetings and the 20min gap between races and as I had BBC News 24 on as they broke the news about the apology I thought I would post it up on here.

Any interest I do have is with regards to Notts County but the less said about that the better

With that I shall get my coat and leave the Football Section.

Bye Bye.

These are the real thoughts of Luis Suarez. Bare in mind this happened really quickly.

"OK, I will shake his hand. Oh, what a child - he doesn't want to shake with me. Never mind, I'll go on to the next guy. Now what's his problem - why is he grabbing my arm."

That's all folks. Nothing more to see.

The way I see it, Ferdinand should have been lambasted as well. Another 'victim' who likes being centre of attention.

Again a case of: One rule for Manchester United players and another rule for everyone else.

Every time I watch the video with Evra crashing into Ferdinand instead of Suarez, I burst out laughing. I can't stop myself. It's so funny. They are both so stupid.

What would have happened if Rio had broken his neck. Who would have been blamed then? Would that have also been Luis Suarez's fault as well.

Suarez is the victim here, you all need to understand that fact.

The way I see it is if you want to play the game and get payed alot of money for it, then you have to abide by the rules,

The F.A deemed what Suarez said to Evra to be against their rules and therfore he was punished accordingly.

It doesn’t really matter what my or any other persons view is on it. the only definition relivent here is that of F.a.

Suarez / Liverpool / Dalglish have been an embarrassment throughout imo and if it had been handled differently it would have been put to bed weeks ago.

The 'It may be politically incorrect but..' brigade are still with us, I see.

What a lot of rubbish.

The sensitivity about using black as an insult is for very obvious historical reasons. If you are not familiar with them, googling 'slavery' and 'apartheid' will help.

Reading the life of Basil D'Olivera might help also.

I'm not aware of any culture in which ginger haired people were systematically denied any rights because of their hair colour. That's the difference.

As for Powell, his speech might have been worthwhile in the 50s when large numbers of people were being shipped over from the West Indies and the Indian subcontinent as the UK was very short of labour.

I can't see much use for it in 1968.

And in the matter of historical prediction he was quite simply wrong.

I too am not very interested in football.

I am interested in confronting racism.

Given that the evidence was carefully evaluated before the judgement, and Liverpool failed to appeal, I give that much more weight than the opinions of mere fans.

Given that Suarez has apologised, I give that too much more weight than the opinions of mere fans.

Racism is real, this happened, it continues to happen, it should be stopped.

Watch this again as you're clearly missing the point.

Then, watch this

It is scandal that this man is not up on a charge himself. He is inciting violence - which is far worse than just calling someone a name.

payuppal, you're wrong

I know this is a football debate, but my Mum & Dad lived in Featherstone, Wolverhampton from 68-71. Enoch Powell's constituency was nearby and he was considered a local hero. Immigration was having a serious impact on life there, so his speech was definitely relevant

You're wrong on both points - I'm ginger and my life at school was marred by taunts - I tried to kill myself when I was 12. As a child I wasn't aware of the unimportance of name calling.

Enoch Powell spoke the truth - my girlfriend is black - but I still believe that his historical speech in 1968 was factually correct.

You must forget the past as the world was run by different people 200 years ago. Get rid of that chip on your shoulder.

I am an adult now and all that name taunting has gone forever. I'm still ginger, but adults treat each other with respect. Only children act like spoilt little kids (Rio and Patrice).

My question is this:

Is football a man's game OR a childs game.

You have to laugh at the levels of hysteria that get created by the slightest little thing nowadays. Since when did one idiot not shaking another idiots hand become the top news story and require an intervention from the prime minister?! Suarez was found guilty of racism and was punished. The rest is just child's play. If they want to slug it out then maybe they should just meet up and get on with it privately. One news reporter described Suarez refusing to shake Evra's hand as 'unspeakable'!

Maybe this is what happens when society reaches a certain level of comfort with blanket media coverage driving people into a frenzy and telling them exactly how they 'should' think about things and what is the 'right' position all the time.

Makes me want to plug out and go live in a cave
