sounds like you backed and layed at the same price.
for instance backed £x at 2.98 and at some point layed the same amount at the same odds 2.98. (or the other way round layed then backed)in short you scratched the trades.
which is exactly what you should do if the market does not go your way,or scratch a tick or two lower/higher for a small loss(once you hedge it).
ideally you hope to back at a price then lay a tick or so lower, but if it looks as if the price is not going to go down, you do what you done and scratch for no loss.
