wonder if anyone can help...

on average once every day or two i lose my internet connection but it's not the connection between the router and ISP(Sky) - that remains ok as i can still connect wirelessly using a different machine - it's the connection between the machine and the router (or just a problem with the machine maybe).

often the Local Area Connection adaptor gets disabled for no apparent reason.

i'm running Windows 7 on a 64-bit machine and using a wired connection to the ADSL router (Netgear N600). i have tried different ethernet cables so that isn't the problem, and i recently moved into a new flat and the problem is the same and it occurs using different routers so it's not that either.

any ideas?

The first thing I would do would be to check with the manufacturer of the network adapter, in order to see if they have any newer driver software available to install.

If your machine is a laptop, check with that manufacturer's site for an update, also.

What type of machine are you running?

thanks.

the adaptor is Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet (it says the driver is up to date when i try to update it on the properties tab - version 12.2.2.1).

my machine is a desktop - Lenovo C20 workstation.

Lenovo's site is a bit rubbish - it only has drivers listed for your model from 2009... Am I right in thinking that's the date listed for the network adapter's driver in Device Manager?

Try following the directions on this page on Broadcom's website to get the latest version. Hopefully you should be able to install a 2012 version from there...

thanks Ethanol, much appreciated.

yeah 2009, that's why i think it's probably out of date.

i've been to that page and downloaded the appropriate driver which seems more recent, 15.0.0.1, but when i try to update the driver (pointing to the folder containing the downloaded zip file) Windows just says that the driver is up-to-date and doesn't try to install the new driver.

do you think it's safe to uninstall the existing driver and then try it to force it to install?

I downloaded a random driver from that page and it had a setup.exe file inside the zip archive. Have you tried running that? That should automatically sort it all out for you.

i selected the appropriate one...

167b BCM5755 NetXtreme Desktop/Mobile

and downloaded the Windows 7 (x64) one...

http://www.broadcom.com/support/license ... 0.0.21.zip

but it contains only b57nd60a.cat, b57nd60a.inf and b57nd60a.sys.

what do you reckon to do? thanks.

it was because it needed to be extracted from the zip file.

have done this and the driver installed fine.

thanks for your help.

i'll let you know if it's cured the problem.
