they want independence but want to keep sterling, i.e. they want just fiscal independence!

they still think that North Sea oil is gonna make them rich (the North Sea is not just Scottish and there are only 6 barrels left!).

i hope to God they win - at least then we'd never have to suffer another Labour government in England.

and if they get independence they should take on their fair share of UK national debt - Scottish banks (RBS) were up to their necks in the reckless greed that triggered the financial crisis.

I can see the romance of all of this, a bekilted Alex Salmond doing a braveheart (after some intensive gym training) the rebuilding of hadrians wall, passports it goes on and on But I really cannot see what is in it for the scotland, apart from romantic ideaology?
It would be interesting to hear from north of the border why this might be a good idea for Scotland :|

It's a crafty move by Cameron to allow them the vote. He knows it will seriously damage the Labour Party, as it will be much harder for them to win future General Elections

Exactly. And Cameron (no surprise) has the cheek to say he's going to 'campaign' to keep the UK together. If I was Miliband (and I thank God I'm not!) I would seriously hammer Cameron over this - what kind of 'prime minister' is happy to see part of the country he is supposed to be in charge of kicked into touch just for his own political gain?!

2/3rds of Scottish people polled are against it. IMO It beggers belief that the question is even being asked.

What's more unbelievable is that people aren't calling on Cameron to resign. Hoping to break up the country you're 'in charge' of while campaigning to keep it together is pushing things to greater lows than ever before, which is some going even in this most fake stage managed era of politics. Oh well nevermind let's all read about jimmy saville for the 10th day running instead, far more important

I wouldn't mind so much if he were as keen about giving the people of the UK the right to opt out of the EU as he is to give the Scots the right to opt out of the UK...

The best option for England is to separate from Scotland, North Ireland and Wells then to opt the exit of EU...Then you must wait the next big tsunami ( like the one that created the channel) so you will be completely free..If you clever enough you can build an engine to all the west side and navigate slowly slowly towards USA like a big land ship...

It's true that England without the burden of Scotland, Wales and NI would be a much more prosperous nation (especially if set free from the EU).

I'm not advocating that at all (and NI is more 'British' than England in many ways) but if the Scots want out then that's fine by me. Ireland can replace them if they wish ;)

I'd like to see an England without London and the SE. they have sucked the life out the the rest of the UK.

If Scotland get independence I would consider moving there. A world without the Eton boys sounds great.

The biggest shame about Scotland, is all the famous people who have done anything great don't live there anymore. They left at the first opportunity. Shame.

I've never felt anything other than British so to have my country taken away without any say in it just feels wrong. How many from an Irish immigrant background would vote for independence purely based on their support for Celtic football club, rather than gather any information and form their own opinion, it stinks.
Alex Salmond seems to me someone who is more obsessed with putting his name in the history books and personal fame than the best interests of the Scottish people. My feeling is that the Scots would lose more independence by seperating from the rest of the U.K. as instead of being reliant on the south financially, they'd have to be in Europes pocket to survive and would be losing much more than they would ever gain, it would be nothing more than a case of swapping a union flag for an E.U one.
Being condemned to an eternity of the Tories without Scottish votes would be devastating, they'd do what they wanted and to hell with the rest of us. Everyone may have have their own personal experiences & views of political parties which I respect, but today is my 32nd birthday and in my life so far I have been left nothing but hatred and disgust for the Tories.
I come from Yorkshire and served in the Navy for 6 years, culturally those from the North have far more in common with the rest of the U.K than the South East. I echo the other post and think us up here would be better off seperating as well rather than be subjected to elitist Thatcher clones who have no idea about our everyday lives. Cameron, Osbourne and Hague just make my blood boil.

werewolf,

i was born and bred in The Republic of South Yorkshire (as it used to be called by some) but have ended up with very different political opinions (and that started before my last 20 years in London).
i don't like most Tories either (driven mainly by the self-interest of their own class) but i loathe the alternative much more and especially so since they started social engineering through mass immigration (not much support for that in Yorkshire). my other hatred of the left is their ignorance of basic economics and free markets (the SNP included).

happy birthday! up the blades.
