UK economy's return to growth gets cautious welcome

Call me a party pooper, but I won't be uncorking the champagne just yet...

The economy might have grown by 1% according to the official stats, but that doesn't mean that we're 1% better off as a country in nominal terms (let alone real terms).

The reason for this is that GDP is a very misleading figure. For example, if the government builds a prison, it contributes towards the GDP stats, but it doesn't mean that we are, in any meaningful sense, wealthier as a nation as a result of that building programme. I bet if you look at metrics like how much we export relative to what we import and the extent to which our industrial output is expanding due to investment and innovation, you get a far bleaker picture...

Also you had the Olimpics, that alone has pushed the Uk's economy further.
