Arsene Wenger

Football, Soccer - whatever you call it. It is the beautiful game.

He's 5/1 with Sky to be the next Premiership manager to go (https://www.skybet.com/football/manager ... 1&bsopen=1).

Given that Arsenal have just been knocked out of the FA Cup by Bradford, does anyone think those odds are a bit high?

63% of people polled by the Sun think it's time for him to go, which suggests that he's lost the confidence of most of the fans - see http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... er-go.html.

Not only that, but John Madejski has just come out and said that 2/1 favourite in the sack race Brian McDermott isn't about to be sacked. And as for 7/2 Martin O'Neill, the man is a legend when it comes to getting teams to beat expectations, so Sunderland would be foolish to sack him.

I have always advocated that Wenger will NEVER be sacked, he would have to walk of his own accord.

He has given so much to Arsenal that it is unthinkable that his tenure would end in a sacking.

I think this is unlikely to happen at the moment but is a distinct possibility at the end of the season.

If they were to sack him what options do they have for a replacement?

Options increase significantly during the closed season.

Just a small point it was the League Cup that they were knocked out of not the FA Cup :)

I think he needs a new challenge. He clearly still loves the game, but has become very stale at Arsenal and seems to be in a comfort zone knowing he won't be sacked

I thought a lot about which team in Europe is more fit for a project with the style of Pep. Guardiola and I always thought that at the top of this list there has always been Arsenal...

What a shrewd observation Giulio. Guardiola will obviously want a club which shows it gives time to managers , as well as having resources.

All this points to a dignified exit for AW at season end.5/1 probably gone anyway...

I don't think Wenger will leave Arsenal even at the end of the season, let alone now, for the following reasons.

* They've just come out of a period where they have been severely restrained in the transfer market due to being tied to sponsorship deals linked to the construction of their new stadium. This is a whole topic in itself but if you look at what happens to most clubs when they have build new stadiums themselves they have massively fallen in the short term and is the reason that the likes of Liverpool, Everton, Spurs etc haven't taken the plunge even though it is deemed 'neccessary' to them. Arsenal have just signed new sponsorship deals which will net them roughly 25 million extra a year, with a lot of that being given up front - I would expect them to invest quite heavily in the transfer market this January and possibly during the summer for once, now that they actually have the money.

* Financial Fair Play is likely to stop, or at least massively reign in spending of the 'sugar daddy' clubs that have moved ahead of Arsenal, poached many of their best players and inflated wages across all football. No more competing against clubs like Man City and Chelsea who have been 'gifted' roughly a billion pounds a piece by their owners.

* Spanish football is about to enter meltdown. This isn't being widely reported at the moment but there are something like 14 La Liga clubs with enormous debts owed to the taxman, who has finally run out of patience and is calling it in. Many clubs simply can't pay as attendances are falling due to the huge financial crisis in spain and will go to the wall. We will see a fire sale of players out of Spain at knock down prices (Cazorla, Michu are just the start). The knock on effects will be felt throughout Europe as the Spanish clubs who owe other clubs wont be able to pay (most deals now are paid for over several years by the way.) Clubs run without debts will be laughing and will be able to pick up a great amount of cheap bargains. Wenger was talking recently about the good business Swansea did recently in getting a couple of cheap Spaniards and how this will be the hunting ground soon.

For instance...

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story ... es?cc=5739

*Arsenal wont sack him as even with the extra money they now have he still finds many bargains and nutures 'cheap' youngsters. Any other manager coming in would need more money to spend just to keep Arsenal where they are. The Sunderland comparison is amusing as they have spent far more net than Arsenal in recent seasons in the transfer market (as have the majority of clubs in the premiership) yet are in the relegation zone.

*Wenger is stubborn (or you could say a fighter) and I can't see him walking away just before seeing the fruits of his labour come to fruition.

*Most of the fans are still behind the club and the majority of those moaning vent their anger at the board rather than the manager.

I have to be honest, it was an observation of a member of this forum that started me thinking about. it..

Hi hgodden, i really like your analisys, the only thing I may disagree is the fact that LIGA clubs owe money to the banks, as far as I know, and if so, banks will keep them running.

Thanks Giulio, my understanding is that it is mostly the taxman which is the problem for the spanish clubs. While both the taxman and the banks have been lenient for years, the spanish government is under pressure from spanish tax payers and has started to call in the money owed, and isn't bothered if clubs close down while many normal spaniards are barely able to feed themselves.

This doesn't affect Real or Barcelona btw, but does affect several other top clubs like Athletico and Valencia. Although I do find it interesting that Real are reportedly looking to sell Ronaldo to PSG in the summer. Whether it is true or whether there is a connection I don't know.
