Lionel Messi set a record of 86 goals

Football, Soccer - whatever you call it. It is the beautiful game.

I think that, in years to come, his performance today may be the new normal for top pros, as he raised people's beliefs about what is achievable, in the same way as athletics world records of decades ago are regularly surpassed by today's athletes.

A few disappointed people in this thread. A goal is a goal no matter where it is scored from. The fact is that Messi links in and dribbles past people to be in the box to score. Hes not a lineker who will be in there "poaching" getting rebounds (not trying to open a debate on lineker). Messi will have built the move from outside the box.

Pele was playing against blokes selling fish down the market. Messi is playing against pros training all day!

The guy is a legend so enjoy watching living day legends and dont think about what could have been if only you had.......

Oh, I forgot to mention earlier, he's a cheat and a cry baby.

Not worth a light in my opinion.

Listen, he's the most over-rated player ever!!!

Even more so than Ronaldo.

'[Alan Hansen] is a footballing guru'.
Pdupre1961

'And in Messi, they have a player who is on a different planet to anybody else. At one point, he dropped his shoulder and sent three United defenders and half the crowd behind the goal the wrong way.

He was absolutely amazing at Wembley. The hallmark of any player is the ease of which he finds time and space, but Messi somehow finds that space in an area as congested at that between the six and 18 yard box. He almost dances with the ball and I have never seen a player with such quick feet and the ability to finish that Messi possesses.'

Nuff said... ;)

The striker Chitalu, from Zambia "(107 goals)" and the striker Zico, from Brazil "(89 goals)",have been documented, claimed the respective football federations. Zambia and Brazil will appeal to FIFA to the recognition of these respectively records

Exactly my point:

If you're surrounded by muppets, it's easy to look good.

Football in 2012 is no where near on a par to the 1970's football. Yes, the players are fitter, but a lot less talented...

I'd be extremely surprised if that were the case, given that standards have risen in probably every other sporting endeavour since the 70s (compare world record athletic track times, for example).

BTW, did you like the Alan Hansen quote I posted?

pdurple, your showing your age mate. You sound like my grandada, muddy pitches, leather balls etc..... Im with jeff on this one that the players today are fitter, stronger and in general more skillful. The way the game is played may not be as exciting as the 70s on water logged pitches, knee high sliding tackles, football violence etc..... but the players now are more tactically aware which is even more amazing by Messi record as teams will be purposely out there to try and stop him. Not saying Pele or Maradonna werent.great players but you just got to sit back and enjoy the brilliance as its what inspires.

Just on a slightly different note off topic a bit, any other sports people that people have really drawn inspiration from watching them develop? Tiger for me being a.golfer is one and he also had.the same problem of people comparing to Jack nickolas because of golf club technology but I always enjoyed watching his brilliance. Also hoping.for.the.same from the kid roary but I.can see him getting mixed up in a life of russian birds, maffia and columbian business men. Hope im wrong but will be interesting to see him over the next few years cos that boy can play.

I asked you what you thought of the quote by 'footballing guru' (your words) Alan Hansen about Messi.

Like certain others on this forum, you are not always forthcoming when people put questions to you that challenge your views.

There's no need for cheap put-downs...
