How ridiculous is the cost of flying now? Just been browsing some flights for half term. For a flight to the US I was quoted the following tax & fees per person!
UK Passenger Service Charge GBP 56.00
USA Transportation Tax GBP 109.00
USA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service Fee GBP 16.00
USA Passenger Facility Charge GBP 14.50
UK Air Passenger Duty GBP 650.00
USA Immigration Service Fee GBP 22.00
September 11th Security Fee GBP 8.00
USA Customs User Fee GBP 17.50
All these costs are BEFORE the cost of the actual flight itself!

I just looked at the cheapest possible flight at the worst times etc to see if that would make any difference. But because of the fixed cost of the taxes the cheap flights are even worse on a % basis.
£150 return flight, nearly £327 in taxes!!!

air travel is effectively subsidised compared to other forms of transport because there is no duty on jet fuel.
so you're really getting a bargain.
