Not that I ever felt for them before, but if I had I never will again. I refer to our friends the bookies. This week I visited a hall that was being purchased and the new owners had requested a quote from myself for something. Fantastic property set in an absolutely fantastic picturesque location with many outbuildings gardens and garages etc and you guessed right it was being purchased by the owner of one of the very well known high street bookies. Nothing more interesting than that I am afraid, I just wanted to share with someone. Hopefully I will get to meet him in person so I can pick his brains!

Was it the Coates family by any chance?

Le Tiss - Looks I like was not successful with my quote so I can now say Bet365 were the bookies but never got the name of the man himself as one of his staff was doing the organising. Is that the Coates?

Perhaps the "World's biggest Bookmaker" would have been more obliging if you had been allowed to stipulate on your quote that you were only able to complete £2.58 of the work for them. I'm sure they would have been well acquainted with this business practice. ;)

In the past I have contracted a few times for the very wealthy. If you are dealing with the person with the money directly usually no probs but if your dealing with a variety of agents hencemen proffesionals and all the other assorted thieves that get involved with these prestige projects... count yourself lucky that you lost the contract.. I speak from bitter experience :x

Yeah Peter Coates, who owns Stoke City started with betting shops in the 70's. His daughter Denise was the driving force behind the online operation. They sold off all their shops, Peter became the chairman and Denise now runs Bet365 with her brother John, so Bet365 are very much a Coates family run business

in fairness to them they took a huge gamble with the Ray Winstone "and the live odds will now appear on your screen" ads which was really ground breaking stuff, normally Ads have to be posted with the booking agents 2-4wks in advance with prior approval from the ASA and others. It was reputedly a 9 figure annual budget, turnover improved from 8.5bn to 12.4bn in 12mths. If the Ad campaign had failed we probably wouldn't have heard of them and never likely to.

Notice Laddaqs is following suit, i think they all will in time.
