Hi guys
First off, my name is Paul, 41 years old, single, fed up s/e sparky, 2 failed marriages, 2 grown up kids (so have loads of time on my hands), complete trading newbie but prepared to put all of that spare time into learning the art of trading over the next few years.
Been researching trading for about 7 months now. Been bouncing around the net reading thousands of webpages, blogs and forums etc, spent night after night in bed awake running ideas through my mind only to test or back test and then jump quickly on to the next idea. I was basically going round and round in circles getting no where fast.
3 weeks ago I downloaded the free trial of BA, best thing I ever did trading wise, now upgraded to 1 year. Since downloading BA, it's made me feel like I have found a solid base to work from, I have spent the last 3 weeks reading up on most of the forum, learning how the software works in practice mode, using Soccer Mystic to learn price movements. Also a huge thanks to everyone who contributes to forum posts etc, I'm finally starting to feel the last 7 months has not been a waste of time.
Footy is my interest and has been my whole life (playing and watching), its what I know best and where I want to concentrate my trading apprenticeship on. I've picked some awesome ideas up from reading the forum and can't wait for next season to really get to grips with them and learn how to trade them profitably.
I have had a dabble with pre race horses on the practice mode but right now that is def not for me and wont be for a long time if at all. As a kid my Nan used to take me to bingo and I would play one book and she would play six bless her, I struggled to keep up with one and always wondered how the hell these old girls used to managed six lol, well scalping the horses is a similar hurdle for me as those six books would of been, so I will leave the GGs alone for now and the bingo can do one for good.
So yeah 'I'm gutted the footy season is over' and will have to wait a couple of months before I can really start get to grips with the markets.
Gona have a look at the tennis markets over the off season and try to learn how they move round.
I also love boxing but haven't read a single post on that so far. Looking forward to the big fight tomorrow night and had a look at the prices earlier, haven't got a clue how the boxing markets behave but Froch seems rather short to me at 1.5 as its an evenly matched fight in reality and could be worth a lay to trade out after a few rounds if it stays tight, anyone out there who's into boxing and have any thoughts on that?
Sorry for the post being so long but before I go I would just like to say a big thanks to Peter and everyone else who has shared some of their wisdom on here for newbies like me to feed off. For any newbie guests reading this, download, dig in and maybe you could find yourself some golden info too!
Cheers
Paul
Gutted the footy season is over!
Hi Paul,
I'm a full-time trader, and also very rarely get involved in Horses, apart from major meetings or Group 1 races. I predominately trade football & tennis
There's still bits & bobs of football. Internationals will coming up soon, and I like to dabble on Swedish football which continues throughout the summer - there's normally decent liquidity on that
You mention Tennis, this is why I'm not so worried about football coming to a close, because Tennis is a brilliant sport to trade, both pre-event & in play
Try to take advantage of the next 6 weeks by studying Tennis, Paul
We have Roland Garros starting Sunday & Wimbledon 24th June. The liquidity is massive on Grand Slams, especially Wimbledon & there's some amazing money to be made on pre-event price movements.
Have a look & see what you can take from it. There will be a few of us contributing to the forums during these Slams
Good Luck

Hi LeTiss
Firstly, thanks for the reply!
Yes I def will be trying to get my head around how, why and when the Tennis markets move over the next few weeks. No doubt it will take an awful lot longer than those few weeks to understand it but I think with limited footy for now its a perfect opportunity to make a start.
I have read many of your posts over the last few weeks LeTiss and they along with the others have defiantly contributed to me having a very positive attitude towards the long road ahead.
Cheers

Hey good luck Paul
Sorry I can't really help out with the footie; Ive never really made great profits from it. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here and a few nuggets in the forum if you look deep enought.
Anyway good luck with the trading!
Regards
Peter

Thanks guys
Really looking forward to the next few months and beyond.
I understand to be successful you have to find your own path in trading, I'm more than happy to simply pick up bits and pieces of positive info along the way and try to work the rest out for myself.
I'm not one of these newbies who thinks trading is easy money and all it takes is buying some software, sticking some money in a betfair account, hit the green button and then go and buy a Ferrari. Nobody got anywhere without working for it apart from those that are blessed with luck and that I certainly am not.
I know its gona be a long road but the further I travel the closer I will get and I'm happy with that, you get out of life what you put into it!
Cheers

Hi Tradertician. Just sending you some thoughts I have had as a new trader on one aspect of trading...being selective. Like me, you have more than likely read a lot about the importance of it and I can say it is well worth being selective on your trades, rather than trading everything. The problem for new inexperienced traders like us is that it is only possible to be selective if you know what to... and what not to select! So, the best way is to experiment but using very small stakes until you can be selective. I am trying to decide which races are good to trade and which are not but it does take time...so keep at it and good luck!

Again thanks for the positive input guys!
Oh yes redtra, being selective and not forcing trades is one thing that keeps coming up from experienced traders.
I have settled into an approach that looks for opportunities within a footy game that present a chance to nip in and out of the market during times the market is moving faster than normal and with a reasonably low risk of getting caught by a goal.
Patience is the name of the game, if an opportunity does not arise, then I simply DO NOT trade and if I miss an opportunity then I wait for the next one.
I would imagine patience is one of the hardest things a newbie has to deal with, probably only second to taking a loss with no emotion!? Both of which I will find out over the coming months if I can deal with!!
