Well thanks guys, the race pretty much worked out as expected. Poor old Kevin Manning looked distraught after the race. You cannot apportion any blame to him, the horse has speed and wanted to go faster, they should never have attempted that race, he now has a nasty duck egg on his record.

I don't think superstar status is my thing nor do I think I am worthy of it. The data was there for all the "experts" especially Statler and Waldorf but they never want to explore it for fear of....errr....I'm not really sure to be honest. They just seem happier blowing warm air up one another and constantly agreeing with one another. Hey ho, they gave a brilliant after timing assessment of the race and it was spot on!

Battle Of Marengo 1.67 0.54
Chopin 1.15 0.21
Dawn Approach 1.67 0.38
Festive Cheer 0.80 0.06
Flying the Flag 1.35 0.30
Galileo Rock 0.78 -0.08
Libertarian 0.65 -0.29
Mars 1.29 0.33
Mirsaale 0.74 -0.05
Ocean Applause 2.33* 0.6
Ocovango 0.88 0.10
Ruler of the World 1.05 0.26

* This is very high suggesting it won't see out the trip. 500/1 with the bookmaker and 1000 on Betfair

If forced to choose one I would go for Ruler of the World each way
I like many on here really appreciate this insight into the mechanics of a race horse.... can you sugggest a good reference work as an intro for someone who knows jack s... about horses, but is really interested in understanding? thanks again for your posts

Crikey, thanks guys for the positive comments, I really do appreciate them. This race took about 20 minutes of research but it takes me a while to type it up as the room is spinning most of the time

Mugs - I reckon I might give full-time a go!

Groovy - I get asked a lot about books, did I recommend one to you before? My brain is pretty addled at the moment so my memory is sketchy at best.

A lot of the information I use is self taught. Well I say self taught, some of it comes from other sources, snippets I like and decide to expand upon. When I started liking racing as a young boy there was nothing to read or research. Everyone drooled about Timeform's "Black Book" but I don't ever recall seeing one!! I learned a lot from other people's mistakes, especially my Grandfather who would bet on two flies walking up a wall and still back the loser!!

Ooh...I just remembered a good book. Honestly I was sat here trying to type and think and it popped into my head

Betting for a Living by Nick Mordin

It's an old book now, 1992 when it hit the shelves but it makes you think and work at your betting/study etc. I love anything by Nick Mordin and have been lucky in that I have his e-mail and occasionally he takes time to reply. I know he's not based in the UK at the moment but often he will share a little gem with me. I think a lot of my thinking has been formed around his ideas.

If you like systems then another book by Mordin is "Winning without thinking" which discusses patterns/trends you can use to select horses. It's also something that makes you think about the market.

I'll have to think some more about books I have read and get back to you. Is there a specific starting point you want in your study?

Thanks again to everyone, if there is anything you want covered then please ask and I will do my best to write something.
