Former England manager Graham Taylor says the success of the Premier League is hindering England's national team.

The England Under-21s exited the European Championship at the group stage on Saturday.

Research has shown that the playing time of English players under the age of 21 in the Premier League has fallen to its lowest-ever level.

“If Manuel Pellegrini comes in, I'll be amazed if he signs an English player” - Former England manager Graham Taylor

Taylor said: "Commercially the Premier League has been a major success but at the expense of English players."

According to new research by the CIES Football Observatory, only 35 England-qualified players younger than 21 made appearances in the Premier League last season, the lowest figure since 2005.

Yes, because before the PL in 1993, we were huge achievers at International level

I read somewhere recently that we have 2,500 coaches in England with B,A, Pro Badges......In Italy, France, Spain & Germany they all have over 25,000!!

I remember as a young lad in the 80's, I played midfield & had lots of skill, but was hopeless at getting stuck in. Our team manager used to teach me the art of taking someone's legs away, or how to run your studs down someone's calf & heel without the ref seeing it!

That says everything about English football, our coaching at Youth Level is absolute shit, the PL is just the tip of the iceberg

"Hughton, whose side finished 11th in the Premier League last season, explains that it is not easy for every manager to prioritise selecting English players."

I agree with this statement. After all, English players and coaches don't have a monopoly in playing time. As a sport and as a business, teams have to compete in every aspect of the game regardless of nationality and race. The only basis they should have is the individual ability of each player and how they fit into the game plan.

That's the ideal scenario should be. Unless managers play favourites in selecting players. Just my two cents. :D
