A friend asked me what the longest odds were of winners (you know the sort of question 'Just how often does a 100/1 romp home?'). I looked at my data over the last 8 months and found a really odd one just the other day.

Leopardstown 21:00. The horse 'Writers Block' was consistently 70-90 from 4 hours before the start down to 26 minutes. Then it did this:

Code: Select all

Horse Time to event Back Odds (high)
Writers Block	00:26:18 90.00
Writers Block	00:21:18 110.00
Writers Block	00:16:17 100.00
Writers Block	00:11:17 170.00
Writers Block	00:06:15 170.00
Writers Block	00:01:13 330.00
The horse went on to win. Seems like the bookies had it at 50/1 SP, so still quite a surprise. But this huge hike in odds seems extroadinary. Is this sort of thing just 'normal', or might it have been someone manipulating the price on a horse they had a good feeling about, to get great odds. Not even sure if this is possible/practical.

Just curious and a little miffed that I couldn't predict the future, and put some serious money down on it. :-)

I did really well on this race but couldn't figure out why, was going to have a look at it today, but you saved me some time!

Very odd market.
