A few years ago I went to an evening meeting at Chepstow. The aim was to call the race to a friend sat in front of the PC on the exchange. Anyway after a couple of races it was apparent it wasn't going to work as I couldn't get a decent viewing position.

One thing I noticed was a group of young men and women cheering home the winners. They had been drinking quite a lot but to be fair they were simply having a good time albeit loudly.

I was even more surprised when they cheered home the next winner. Curiosity then had the better of me so I asked one of the guys "Have you backed another winner, that's three on the trot isn't it?"

He replied "Yeah we've had all three!"

I asked "How have you managed that, you must be backing the whole field?"

"Yes, there's a bunch of us so we all chip in and cover every runner, perfect plan, we can't lose!"

I knew there was no point trying to explain the concept of running a book and overround so I just smiled and said "Yeah, nice one!"

I walked away chuckling to myself and left them blissfully unaware they were losing on each race.
