Hi Zenyatta,
Having been through a very intensive and expensive 14 months trying to trade manually, I have to agree. There comes a point when more is not necessarily better. Yes, success could be just round the corner but side-stepping into a field such as automation can give you a glimpse of just how far away that 'corner' really is. There is a Zen parallel to this that talks of running into a monolithic stone obstacle on the path you have undertaken to tread. There is no point bashing into the stone hoping it will be broken down so one can continue in a straight line. You are better off traversing around it in order to a. continue and b. recognise the magnitude of what you were really facing. Greater knowledge comes from viewing things from other dimensional perspectives.

Automation is the one area I had a bit of success with, because it was 'off the beaten track you see' - so there was low hanging fruit.
If you go to an area where there's very intense competition (short-term manual trading, pre-off, UK Horse Racing), unless you are very talented, or very lucky, you won't win.
But go off the beaten-track a bit where there is not so much competition (e.g., automation technqiues for horse racing), and there's low hanging fruit there. Much easier.
Makes sense really.
