Hi Angels,

Can anyone give me a view as to whether or not it is worthwhile investing in Fibre Optic Broadband for trading - 60Mbps download speed.

Also are there advantages to connecting to BA over the VPN.

Many thanks.

Hi,

If you're just looking at BA, latency and reliability are generally more important than actual download speed. I haven't got any figures to hand, but the amount of data that BA downloads is (relatively) small. I had awful (2Mbs) broadband before BT Infinity came along, and that was fine with BA.

If you're streaming media (e.g. multiple events streamed from the web) at the same time as trading, then you might benefit. Are you currently having problems with download 'speed' (e.g. buffering web casts etc.)?

Generally, latency is more important, unless you're on dial-up or something :P

And when you say VPN, do you mean use BA VPS (BetAngel remotely hosted)? There are lots of reasons why VPS is good - but it depends on your personal situation. If you do mean VPS, then just search for it on these forums, quite a few messages have been posted about them.

Regards

The way I explain broadband to peoplein a way they better understand is that:

The Download speed is the size of the vehicle on the road, the larger the vehicle the more information it can transport, so a mini (Dial Up internet) can move around far less than a Lorry (Fibre).

For most people this is the more important figure as they might want to download HD TV Shows for example.

But with trading we aren't to interested in moving about large amounts of data relatively speaking. We are more interested in the speed at which we can move it around. As has been said a download speed of 2mbs should be plenty for the amount of data used for trading.

The Latency is the speed the vehicles drive on the roads. This is what we are far more interested in. But most normal internet users are not. They don't notice an extra 100ms on their latency when say sending an email. Gamers and traders do though.

Imagine traffic shaping as speed and lane restrictions put on the roads - if your internet line is traffic shaped by your provider they are slowing everyone down to try and get a better flow for everyone. So look for providers how don't traffic shape as well.

Also check to see if interleaving is turned off on your line as this can add latency: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=ADSL_ ... terleaving

I personally recommend Zen internet.

Hi Andy & IPC - thank you very much for taking the time to reply. It is really appreaciated.

You have both clarified my thinking with your explanations. My requirement is for low latency as opposed to download speed; and yes, I do mean hosted VPS and not VPN.

Thanks again.

We are getting fibre optic installed in the office today. So give it a few weeks and I'll report back our experiences.

Forgot to report back, here is the speed measurements.

Fibre : Ping 8ms, Down 75Mbps, Up 10Mbps

VPS : Ping 0ms, Down 92.50Mbps, Up 85.03Mbps

Folks, something I found out recently on my BT Router (infinity) is that you have a single Gige port and 3 slower ports. the Gige is as fast as the fibre the others 10 x slower. I now have my system hardwired into the gige (You need to have a gige device too)
I had to crawl under the floor like a sniper to get the bloody cable in
Worthwhie checking your routers...mlliseconds matter :)

From BT :-

What does the GigE port do on my BT Home Hub?

On the back of your BT Home Hub 3 or Hub 4 there are four yellow Ethernet ports that allow you to connect devices to the Hub. Port 4 is labelled as GigE. On the BT Home Hub 5, all the yellow ports are labelled as GigE.
GigE or Gigabit Ethernet is the way we talk about the technology for transmitting data at a rate of a gigabit per second (or 1,000 megabits per second). That's ten times faster than the other three ports, which transmit data at 100 megabits per second.
If you've got BT Infinity then this allows devices that are connected to the GigE port to receive data at the same speed as it is received from the fibre connection. To benefit from the faster speed, your device must also have a Gigabit Ethernet port.
If you've got BT Broadband then you can use the GigE port to connect big, fast hard drives known as Network Attached Storage devices. You can then use these drives to stream films and music to other devices that are connected to the other Ethernet ports or which connect to the Hub wirelessly.
If you want to set up an Ethernet network around your home, you can also this port to feed an Ethernet network switch. A wired network will allow you to make the most of the faster speeds of BT Infinity.

fyi - the Virgin Media new Super Hub has 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports as standard. Manufacturer: Netgear
Here is a review.

if you short on money take the cheapest plan with Fiber. You can upgrade anytime. The fastest possible way to transmit information from one place to another is through an optical fiber. To travel 1000 kilometers in fiber, the light signal will take ~5 milliseconds + additional delays due to communication equipment.

I'm curious as to how much some of the pros have spent on technology to maintain their edge, secondly do you think it is sustainable to spend huge dollars on technology when eventually someone will always have a faster connection to the exchange ? eg betfair employees.
