Today will be a bit of mixed up day I would think. It will be difficult to see through the clashing races.
yes, understood, I was just raising a wee dig Hammersmith way. In my view they are now operating bots that trade against their users, behind closed doors natch, although not necessarily the cause here

cheers

Last meeting I had there was with the exchange MD and he swore blind that was not the case. But I'll keep asking the question.

What we need is a smoking gun if we want to really pursue that angle.

Whistleblower's will be the only way. So, fingers crossed there is a Snowden in betfair's future

if the MD is willing to lie to your face...

Good reminder!

And on the subject of smoking guns, here's a wee one. From the advert:

"Betfair can be exposed to a significant profit or loss based upon the outcome of the events on which the customers bet."

Utter bollocks, of course. An exchange cannot be exposed to loss, unless perchance it's trading when it should just be, er, yuo know, exchanging.

On reflection, while skimming the betfair annual report I think there may be a (slightly) more innocent explanation for this one.

This academic research is probably for the betfair Sportsbook team - ie, they are trying to work out how to rip off mugs, which is what every bookie does.

Quote from their 2013 report

"on our Sportsbook, we act as principals in each transaction so customers are betting directly against Betfair; the Sportsbook can therefore lose money
on any particular market with revenue being dependent on sporting outcomes;"

It's only "slightly" less innocent as I expect the conclusion of the research is to trade off the Sportsbook risks by trading against exchange users

Cheers
