Now the kids are a bit older I'm looking at getting a new console in the house. It feels to me like Xbox is winning the console wars, but I'm interested in getting views and opinions from established gamers on the best one to choose.

If you want it for a social thing that both you and the kids can play on then my top recomendation is a Wii with Wii Plus controllers and a Wii Fit Plus Board.

It is great fun for young and old. I tell you my Hula Hoop action is quite something  When we all first went on it we spent more time rolling on the floor in laughter than we did doing the hula!

Young kids like them but they are great fun for the adults especially after few drinks!

If you are looking for something that is pure gaming I would go for an Xbox but it isn't social, they will normally play on it on their own or just two of them. Again adults like them but a lot of the games are shoot em ups type of things so not all parents are keen on their kids playing on them.

If you don't have a Bluray player and wouldn't mind one the PS3 has one built in but persoanlly the PS3 isn't as good a games console and you are better of buying a proper Blu Ray player and a decent set of speakers for movies anyway.

So to summarise if you want something for you and the kids to enjoy together and that will provide hours of laughs and fun I would go down the Wii route, if you want it purely as a gamer I would go for a Xbox.

Hope that helps.

Oh I forgot to say don't forget to budget for all the extras you will end up buying for example, with the Wii you will want at least 2 controllers and the Motion Plus attachments, you will want the Wii Fit Plus board for example.

With an Xbox you will want the yearly Gold Online Subscription, perhaps a Wifi adapter, though I would use homeplugs, a secon controller.

Then of course you have the games on top.
