Big Sam was well into the data side of football quite early at Bolton. I'd imagine most teams are these days to help track work rate of players and all kinds of stuff. He probably had stats on how far our defenders could boot it and once they came short of their average they would be substituted. The glory days!

Back when I was predicting draws in my youth I analysed what happens inplay during a match and presented that to some clubs and magazines. It fell on deaf ears, else I may have ended up founding opta!

Much more popular now. I have done some informal work with clubs in recent years, but nothing really serious.

The brother of a friend of mine did Phd in sport science and last time I heard he was working with the swiss Ski team analysing their jumps.
I would imagine it would be a fascinating area to go into if you were just starting out in your career (better than the corporate ladder :( )
I bet its very well paid too!

Redknapp turned to Wilson and said, "I'll tell you what, next week, why don't we get your computer to play against their computer and see who wins?"

I have a degree in sports science, just wish I'd concentrated more during the statistics modules!

Euler, I'm curious as to the methods you would use to predict draws?

A high correlation of each teams scores against the same teams perhaps?

Or different...
