Question for people who live or work in London.

I may be about to be offered a job in Central London (salary: £21 k). Whether or not I take it will depend on whether I will be able to afford to live somewhere reasonably comfortable within an hour's commuting distance of work.

Do you think I would be able to?

Thanks,

Jeff

Preston to Morecambe to Scotland and now London

You've been around more than my ex-girlfriend Suzanne!

21K gross? I lived in zone2, I have spent between 1400 to 2000 net a month but, had 50ms apartment and lived alone. You will probably make between 1200-1400 net, right? If you don't have to pay loans, credit cards, etc, you should be fine. Some fruit&veg markets offer some real deals for shopping in the weekend. The fish is reasonable cheap if you know which market to go so the meat. Take aways are quite affordable too. Transports are very expensive tough. That's what I remember. However compare to some major citys in Europe, London wages can be very low for professionals. Taxes though are lower then most countrys in western Europe.

Thanks guys.

I've been doing a bit of research, and I reckon if I live in Enfield then it will be doable.

Thanks Frank.

I've also been considering Del Boy territory - Peckham - although the thought of having Hattie Harperson as my MP makes my toes curl!

£21k gross is shit money in London

If you don't have a decent sum in the bank initially, you'll be living in areas full of bloody muslims and asylum seekers

It is crap money, I agree.

I find your comment about muslims and asylum seekers a bit concerning. I don't care what my neighbours' creed or nationality is.

I was going to ask you what you have against muslims, but I'd better not in case you write something that gets you arrested. :)

I have nothing against them at all

But lack of money leads to lack of choices - and invariably that means living in areas full of immigrants. I used to be a pharmacy rep in those areas, and I wouldn't want to live there!

Depends which parts again though. I know someone who owns in the East in what used to be considered a lesser part and their house has been going up £10,000/month in value for a well over a year now. The East has become quite expensive in a lot of areas.

Jeff just don't turn into an idiot like this who loves himself so much. Talk about first world problems! There is a strike on and christ behold he has to wait an extra 4 mins for a train because he misses one due to him getting his latte which he only bought because as he likes to tell us means he is helping local businesses!

If you miss a bus round my parts you have to wait another day!

I repped for a while in Herts a few years ago. I loved it down there - the people were really friendly.

Not sure how viable it would be for me to commute from there to the centre of London though, particularly given how much the train fare would be.

BTW, apparently some people commute from places as far away as Southampton, Cambridge and Norwich: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25593532

you might do when the reality of living in some places sinks in. there are many areas I wouldn't live in London (and most of them are areas I've previously lived in!).
