Why is that though? Is it because they are run-down areas which immigrants have moved to (because they can't afford to live anywhere more upmarket), or are the areas run down because of the immigrants?
I would say it's more likely to be the former.
As it happens, where I live in Edinburgh is very ethnically diverse, as is Preston where I used to live, and I've never witnessed any problems created by that.

One piece of advice I'd give Jeff, is to maybe consider looking for someone who are hoping to rent a room within their house
That will be more affordable than searching for an actual flat on your own. Plus, the house will possibly be in a more desirable area, and it will also allow you to meet friends quicker, as you won't be sat in a bedsit on your own
