Well just one night to go and Cheltenham will be upon us. I am such a huge fan of the racing at Cheltenham that I change my trading for the 4 days. I know it's not the done thing so please don't shoot me down. I tend to study the form, pick 2-3 horses I fancy, trade them and leave the profit on them as a free bet. I then either let it ride if I am supremely confident or I green up in running if there is a good profit on offer and I can see a few dark horses planning to spoil my party.

Cheltenham 1:30

I will trade Dunguib but I will green up because the price is so short. There will be 18 runners charging around Cheltenham and anything can happen. I think he will win but I couldn't back him at 2.00. Blackstairmountain or Getmeoutofhere are live contenders but Dunguib looks to be a machine and if he wins this well they'll probably offer 4.50 about next year's Champion Hurdle.

Cheltenham 2:00

I really like the look of Sizing Europe in this race. He's always looked like a chaser and his habit of over jumping hurdles meant he failed to live up to the high expectations in that sphere. Captain Cee Bee has suffered injuries and he's not too quick at his fences so I can't fancy him. He obviously has a chance but at the price there is no way I can take an interest. I cannot consider Mad Max as a contender because he is just too big and slow and he didn't run too well up the Cheltenham hill when he last ran there. I will look to steal some profit on Riverside Theatre and Quiscover Fontaine as they are live outsiders. I am worried about the form of the Mullins yard but this horse will be a big price so I can't ask for too much. Most of my trading will be on Sizing Europe and I hope to see him cruise up to the leaders between the last two and stride on to win by 4 lenghts....we have to dream :D

Cheltenham 2:40

I am going to trade Bensalem in this race to the exclusion of others. If Diamond Harry was in this race he'd be a very short price and Bensalem gave him a good race last time out. That was a difficult race with just 3 runners and that didn't suit him. He still produced a decent race and I think everything is in his favour tomorrow. He's a bit short to be backing but if I can trade up a decent amount then I should get a decent run for money.

Champion Hurdle

The forgotten horse, well the two forgotten horses are Celestial Halo and Punjabi. There seems to be lots of talk about Go Native, Solwhit and Binocular that my two seem to have sneaked under the radar. I feel sure Ruby Walsh wishes he could've held onto Celestial Halo a bit longer last year as he appeared to hit the front too soon and he was mugged by Punjabi. Paul Nicholls is on record as saying he has never had this horse sharper so that augurs well. He has a high cruising speed and he is extremely quick over the hurdles and you need both to win a Champion Hurdle. Punjabi has always given his running despite his recent races not really suiting him. he needs a strong pace, not a crawl followed by a sprint and I feel he will get that tomorrow which should see him being on the premises when it counts. I may trade on Binocular too but for smaller amounts because I am concern about the miraculous recovery made by this horse. He was out of the race with a muscle problem but suddenly he's okay?? That's a concern but I respect his chances if he's 100% and will try and trade him. You can't ignore Go Native but I can't trade all four so I'll just leave this horse alone although he is worthy of his place in the line up. A good friend of mine says Khyber Kim will not come off the bridle to win this race but the ground will be a lot faster tomorrow and I wonder if that will negate his finish.

The Cross Country race is something of an enigma and I will simply trade and green - hopefully! I guess Enda Bolger will look to add to his long list of winners but at Punchestown last time Another Jewel ran a decent race. You need an adadaptable horse that can handle the myriad of fences and Another Jewel won with any amount in hand over fences of this ilke at Punchestown. Obviously Garde Champetre, heads on the Ground and L'Ami are the fancied ones of Enda Bolger's FIVE runners so this will just be a fun race where hopefully I will win despite the result!

Cheltenham 4:40 is a real conundrum and I will trade this one without an interest. if Quevega is on form she'd win easily but she hasn't progressed from last year and her price of 3.00 is crazy as is the price of Voler La Vedette. I will place a small amount on Amber Brook at around 50 - 55 because she has a chance and the risk is minimal.

To round up, I am not suggesting we all abandon trading and start gambling. This is my preference for the Cheltenham Festival and I get more enjoyment from a once a year event. I am also not suggesting I will be able to trade each horse and make a profit - that is simply my aim!

Good luck to all of you!

good review of the first day. looking forward to reading your views for the rest of the festival but i doubt if i will be in any state on wednesday as i have cultural and religious obligations to attend to, and i will be at cheltenham on thursday and friday, so probably saturday.

i don’t think taking a week out to concentrate trading cheltenham in a different manner is a bad idea, especially if you enjoy the festival. you might even stumble on something new/helpful. you never know.

i used to be layer before a trader. Used to trade whatever horse i decided to lay, to beat sp. then as i had less time to keep form reading up, follow horses etc, i sort of drifted into trading. i really miss laying, and have often thought of doing something similar. maybe i will for aintree.

nice post looking forward to future reviews regards.

Good Preview - I won't be trading 'normally' this week, sometimes there is more to it than trying to make some money!

The next four days it is all about the racing and not the trading!!!

I am going to mix it as well.

Races are so competitive and therefore I will trade but also it is a good opportunity to Dutch and take a view re laying.

I believe that Dunguib will trade longer than around even money at some point as he can't jump! So a Lay to back strategy is what I will go with. He does have an engine though so I will also Dutch Dunguib with Blackstairmountain, Flat Out and Oscar Whiskey.

Captain Cee Bee also has issues jumping and but I think Sizing Europe could have bad memories of the festival - remember festival form usually works out well. I'll lay both because I am feeling brave ;)

A small dutch on Razor Royale, Chief Dan George, Theatrical Moment, The Package and Ogee in the William Hill.

The champion hurdle is so competitive so I will lay Go Native as everything must drop right for him to win and at least 8 horses have a realistic chance of winning.

An Enda Bolger horse will the Cross Country and Voler la Vedette and Quevaga are miles better than anything else in the last.

Remember, take Andy's advice, that the event is more than just about trading so enjoy it.

I unloaded my entire bank on Dunguib at $2 - straight back net aiming to smoke 'em at once. Sometimes you've just gotta know when to go for blood.

I have a feeling Paddy Power could get burnt on this one. I won't be backing Dunguib at even money but I won't be laying him either.

I have followed racing for a long time and I have gone through this race many times and still cannot find anything to oppose Dunguib with! He is a bit clumsy at his hurdles and usually in a fast true run race at Cheltenham you would say he would be found out. However he is so much better than anything else we've seen that it makes sense to watch the race and enjoy it. I liked Menorah but they nearly killed him in his last race and that doesn't augur well for this race. The other horse I like is Blackstairmountain so I may take up Mr Power on his offer and take a chance on this one.

I know this isn't trading but hey it's Cheltenham and it doesn't get any better in terms of NH racing
I can't believe it, the above was my response to the discussion about Paddy Power's refund offer if Dunguib won the race. It seems ironic now that my ante-post bet on Menorah which I had basically written off came up trumps

Well Sizing Europe made me a few quid, I traded out in running and was happy with a guaranteed profit :D

I had some incredible luck with Bensalem because I backed him at 12 in running and then laid it off at 2.20 in running. He was travelling like a winner but you have to jump the fences and he came to grief at the 2nd last having jumped like a stag throughout the race!!

It's so good to trade out be certain of a profit and then enjoy the race.

Put Bensalem in your notebook, if they take him to Aintree he will be worth an interest ;)

I was very unhappy to see Celestial halo acting as the hare - very unhappy!

I had run up profits on that horse and Punjabi but when I saw the blinkers had lit up Celestial Halo I had a real sphincter moment. I just greened up because his price shot into 7.40 from high 9.00s pre race. He needed a horse to follow and simply didn't get one. I can only really remember one horse in recent years that led from start to finish in the Champion hurdle and that was one of my favourite horses in Make a Stand. I still think Celestial Halo can run better and he was running on at the finish. Yet another one to keep an eye on if he goes to Aintree.

I couldn't have fancied Binocular for a straight bet with the build up he had to this race but not backing them means you keep your money in your pocket. No complaints from me, that was a fast race and Binocular showed he is a great champion. I'm just pleased that trading allows us to run up risk free profits!

A very good 1st day for me with the last race the only hiccup.

I just could not get the right side of Voler La Vadette. I reckon someone lost a packet backing that horse against the market.

roll on tomorrow :D
