Today's Horse Racing
I just checked the result out of interest...PeterLe wrote:I just nipped out to pick up my daughters dog and missed that one at Ponte 14:20..(yep my daughter thinks as I work from home I am a dog minder!)
I noticed that lackaday touched a 1000 to 1 a couple of times and came right back down..(think it went as low as 2.68??)
I had a small green on it..but it should have been much better..
Just wondered how close it came to winning in the latter stages..
this horse came second and was beat by just a head..(I had a 4 figure green on that individual selection, so that would have been nice!)
It just beats me how anyone would risk a couple of thousand pounds to win 2, but it happens most days?..anyway someday soon...

Anyone else think that today's NH fields are a total joke?
Can't believe how poor they are. So many 4/5 runner affairs. Hope this isn't an example of what we can expect this NH season...

Agreed Peter.
I know you have been in this game for a long time and for the last 6-7 years I have been also betting on horses but from a 'value bet' point of view rather than trading. I switched to trading about 6 months ago.
I have looked back at my 6 years of data and around this time of year the difference in runners back then compared to now is unbelievable. I was betting on many >15 runner hcp chase/hurdles and taking advantage of the 1/4 place element and these were surrounded with plenty of 8 to 15 runner affairs. For the last 2 years the NH in particular has been terrible in terms of field quality.
Something has definitely hit racing hard over the last few years... There just isn't the quality of fields/horses of late.
Peter, does your records agree with mine that the average number of runners is on a constant downward trend?

Yes fields sizes have been declining, though I'd have to look at the exact numbers. I remember last year my notes often commented on how small the fields were. It makes it hard for everybody I think.
I would much prefer two decent meetings than three poor ones.

I traded 4 races from Longchamp and found the Arc provided the least opportunities by far, nothing seems to get layed, it was all just back money, which is all fine and well, but the price didn't move
The other races traded very well though, how did everyone else fare?

Other factors to consider are that the falling foal crop sizes are starting to feed through.
The supply and demand of the breeding industry is by its very nature very slow to react to changes in supply and demand.
There is much written about foal crop sizes, an article I read the other day about U.S. shows it isn't just a UK and Ireland issue:

was anybody watching the last race at Kempton? around about a minute past post i was in a trade on rasselas when all of a sudden all the money within the ladder disappeared. it lasted only for about a second but the price collapsed and sods law it was a lay position i had open, to be honest i didn't take to big a hit as the price resettled around 6 ticks from where it originally was. i didn't notice if it did it on all the runners as it happened so quick. It was as if the market had suspended and reformed but it didn't say it had and nothing had been withdrawn, the horse had been playing up to post but was o.k once it was at the stalls.
