I don't understand, how can a purely laying or backing strategy be profitable long term if you're paying the premium charge?

Because you are going to pay commission anyhow. It makes no net difference. In fact if you get your commission below 3% then Betfair start paying you.

I've passed a bit of a milestone during the ATP finals this last week. I got my first 4 figure trade and broke my personal best record 3 times throughout the week. Shame Federer pulled out of the final as I was on a roll.

Ah I get it now.
That's a really interesting point about the commission rate, I'd never even thought about it

I was drinking a coffee as I was reading the thread, and spat it all out in shock as I saw Peter Webb's laying profit...I was catapulted back in my chair with shock, simultaneously weeping and laughing with shock

Never sure what the point of posting these totals is. Not really motivating, just damn annoying. And designed to rope in the suckers, the cynic in me often thinks.

If you want a big green, here's a pic. of the tax cert confirming my 34K lottery 'green-up' (5 numbers + bonus ball), and freeing me from all tax obligations. Beat that!

The only reason you're weeping mate is because the £34k has gone!

I'm sure Peter would blow his too if he was also hellbent on shagging his way around Europe!

True. It's a cruel joke getting a decent bit of luck, getting a taste of the good life, and then having it all snatched away again, I've never really gotten over the blow :(

Ha, yes, Peter could definitely go crazy, but he's too level-headed ; still, one can't help but think what he could do with the cash if he wasn't a family man...

Still, I must try getting into this laying game myself. Backing and laying, that's where the really big money is, it seems! Nothing like the glory of huge gambles!

Zen
You have to get over the 34K and move on (by the way, What that AUS $ ?)
Many people (inc myself) have made more than that in a month on betfair. Im not doing anything like that these days..but I'm still plugging away (and making progress)
You've seen a new trader state today that its still possible to do well at this by applying dedication and hard work, so why are you so cynical?!

If we all had a £1.00 for every time Zen has mentioned this bloody lottery win we would all be millionaires Rodney

Winners love the game, but for those struggling, it is understandable that we are not exactly thrilled by the so-called 'opportunities' that trading offers ;)

Myself, gambling is much better suited to my personality than trading; which is why Peter's laying results got my attention. Seems a much more stress-free way to make a living if you ask me, just set-it-and-forget it!
