I am in the uk at the moment and left my laptop on with a betangel spreadsheet bot running at my mother-in-laws house. I went away for a couple of days and on my return the laptop had slowed down dramatically.
Short cuts are running at about half speed and it seems that RAM is being eaten by something. The betangel tabs are really slow to load as well despite there being no problem with the actual internet connection speed . There is nothing unusual running on the task manager process and an avast complete scan found nothing.
What is more worrying is that when I started to type in betfair.com on firefox, I was directly routed to some hideous belgium child porn site.
One time I tried to run the betangel short cut I got the error message including "This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt"
Unless I find a solution quick I will be making a trip to PC world tomorrow to buy a new laptop in time for the GN.
Any suggestions appreciated

The problem seems more like a browser hijack together with a hidden process that is killing your system resources.
Hit CTRL-ALT_DEL and start task manager. See if you have a process running called scvhost.exe Do not mistake it for svchost.exe svchost.exe is a legitimate process used by windows and you need it. If you find the rogue scvhost.exe then you need to get it removed. Try this Remove scvhost virus
If you do not have that particular virus then it could be another nasty virus or malware/spyware lurking somewhere. I don't know much about Avast but a lot of anti-virus packages can miss viruses and do not even look for malware or spyware.
A good product that I use myself and highly recommend is Spysweeper from Webroot. It finds every nasty bug, virus malware spyware greyware and Trojan out there. It even blocks access to sites that pass on these problems. You can get a free scan here Webroot free scan
If you find something then at least you can consider buying the Spysweeper package which also includes Anti-Virus from Sophos. I use this all the time and it has never let me down.
I hope that helps

Finally found the problem, I had plugged the laptop in a different room and was getting an AC power adapter error message and pressing F2 to continue. I tried booting on the battery and the same performance issue continued, but after plugging in the power cable it worked fine and now boots normally.
It still leaves the question of how my laptop got corrupted with porn. It trades 24 hours a day at home on dogs, US and Oz racing without problem but at this house perhaps the router security settings are different.

when you try to open betangel and you get the messagge you have mentioned (This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt) you need to reset your laptop BIOS. A quick research on google will explain you the correct BIOS settings for your laptop. You can also download free antivirus like AVG and system free care to check for spywares and variuos virus.
