As usual we were all up early in my house picking our runners in the Grand National.

I usually devote an hour or so each day during the week going through the runners trying to find the winner. I usually do okay but must confess I did not have the winner last year. In 2008 I was just pipped for the Tricast which would have been a huge payout.

My family generally chat to me about the horses I like throughout the week and this morning I left them to make their picks. The conclusion? Well between them they picked the horses I liked and I am left with a pin and a prayer!

They took

The Package - was 33/1 when I suggested him
Arbor Supreme
Black Apalachi
Character Building

So I will add King John's Castle

That's five horses and we'll be pleased if we get one placed!!!

Good luck to all that have an interest - let's hope all horses and jockeys come back safe and sound!!

Can't forget old 'Tricky Trickster' upsetting Denman. A horse after my own heart

My advice to all.. unload everything you've got... on 'Tricky Trickster' :D

Got McCoy on the winner, a totally sentimental bet but well chuffed!

i dont understand much about horse race but, how come mccoy is never favorite to win ( 10/1 20/1 30/1) last year won with a horse that hit 500/1 in play. surely the jockey count to determinate the odds or not? congratulation to him....he deserve to be the best..

Well after trying to decide who should back who and who had picked what...boy it get's confusing - we started with a fresh list and managed to find 1st 2nd and 3rd! :D 8-) :D 8-) :D

This is not an after the event thing and we won't be getting rich! I said they could have £2 each way on them and when my statement from Coral comes through I'll put in on here. We've had 1st 2nd and 4th before a couple of times and finally we made it 1st 2nd 3rd!! If only we had done the tricast - now that would be pushing it...ouch..forgive the pun!

I also phoned Coral and they are refunding the bet on King John's Castle :D

To hell with the expense, give the cat another Goldfish!!

To all animal lovers...no goldfish were hurt in the writing of this post

In my family of three, my wife went for Mon Mome to go back to back whilst I, after so much thought, went for The Package. We went belly up of course, but my four year old, using a selection method based only on what appealed to him at that particular moment, picked Don't Push It.
Luckily, we put $10 each way on all of them, and managed to get Don't Push It at $24, so we did ok. But it all goes to show doesn't it?!
Well done, my boy, you might just get that trampoline for your birthday! :D

I actually told my colleagues on Friday that McCoy would be a good bet. My reasoning was that he had never won the National, so he'd be especially keen to bag it. And as one of the best jockeys in the world, he would have the pick of the horses. Add to this the fact that Don't Push It was trading at 20/1 at the time, and it looked like a pretty good bet!

But unfortunately, on this occasion, I decided that it wouldn't be sensible to have a fun bet! Just my luck! Do you ever get the feeling that someone up there is having fun with you? :)

What makes it even more incredulous is that McCoy didn't choose this horse, something I was unaware of. I had discussed it with a friend on the morning of the race and we were both scratching our heads because we wondered if he had made a mistake. He could have chosen any of the JP McManus horses and Don't Push It seemed the wrong one in our eyes. They clearly knew something was right about him!

On another note. I used to visit Jackdaw's Castle quite a lot many years ago, I won't go into great detail and I won't pretend I know them. What I will say is you could not wish to meet nicer people. Jonjo would always speak as would JP if he was there. I wasn't there to talk about horses so they were always surprised when I could talk about horses breeding, results etc. I was always making excuses to visit them - which wasn't often enough!

Sadly they never once gave me a tip!

Well as promised here is my statement from Coral. I said we wouldn't be getting rich but £28 is £28 and we did get the 1st 2nd and 3rd!
