Excel problem with horse name

I am using excel 2013.
If I copy the cell B9 (=B9) to AH9, everything is fine. If I copy these down to 11,13,15 etc, again all fine but the blank cells return a 0.
If I use an if function =if(B9="","",B9) then it just returns the function regardless of what is in the cell.
Is this because the cell is merged?
Is there a workaround?

I think it's all good now. Looks like I was using a very old excel template. I have found a newer one and that seems to be all good.
