The Secret Rules of Modern Living: Algorithms - BBC Four - 21:00 Thursday 24th Sep 2015
Without us noticing, modern life has been taken over. Algorithms run everything from search engines on the internet, to sat navs and credit card data security - they even help us travel the world, find love and save lives.
Mathematician Professor Marcus du Sautoy demystifies the hidden world of algorithms. By showing us some of the algorithms most essential to our lives, he reveals where these 2,000-year-old problem solvers came from - how they work, what they have achieved and how they are now so advanced they can even programme themselves.

Thanks for that Andy, I listened to the Audio book few years ago and found it to be one of the better ones so this will make a nice addition to my 2008 crash collectionandyfuller wrote:I am looking forward to this coming out:

Today between 11.00am and 12.00 Radio 5 live investigates Restricted Betting.
Might be interesting for those of you who started out as Value bettors with bookies and then switched to trading (like me). Certainly the bookie restrictions of late have definitely changed the way the exchange markets form and therefore traders should be interested...
Cheers
Martin

Listening as I post. Further to this just type "bookie ripoff" into youtube, eventually you'll find these guys.
"Sick and corrupt bookmaking industry exposed"
they are not "happy chappies"
New South Wales sounds interesting but not exactly round the corner
Apparently some of the subscription based tipsters make their living from this because they are the banned and damned????
If the bookies aren't sorted out T*sc* will have horseburger as a delicious and nutrious alternative to our kiddies diet (or Jockeyburger? both are low fat and drug free (or should be)) BHA please note.
Have to feed it to the kids 'cos I don't fancy it
If anybody can get BF to listen, kindly point out that the customer is not just a dumb cash cow and we can all read and understand this thread and the "BF down" thread Ho Hum

Hi yes it is a major problem and as well as killing horse racing it is one of what is ethical and fair. If you heard Neil Smith in the radio interview, he mentioned his betting partner 'Martin', that was me. We worked together for 6 years and were able to make a decent living betting value horses until the constant restrictions come into play a few years back.
The nonsense they used in the radio about letting pros win all the money would prevent normal people winning! What a joke. Bookies are meant to be able to balance their books, so as soon as the first 'pros' starting to take advantage of early value bets they could simply lower their price for the horse. They just don't want the hassle of managing their books.
Anyway, all I ever needed was a £25 ew bet per horse and that gave me a profit of over £50,000 per year. Surely they can cope with a few punters placing 25EW!
The fact the value bettors have left the market is having a knock on effect with the exchanges. The weekday racing markets are so weak and I have noticed the drop off since the bookies have stopped anyone from winning.
What really gets me angry is the fact that a bookie sells itself on offering bets to punters in order that they have the dream/chance of winning. Yet, you are not allowed to win! Surely that is unethical. I had some accounts blocked by bookies after 1 bet and would you believe 1 account with hills that was blocked when I tried to place the first bet.
This is surely unfair...
Thank god for trading/Bet Angel as otherwise there would be no way to make any money from horse racing...
Cheers
