I have to say I have a warm spot in my heart for McCririck! He's one of the few people on television these days (Jeremy Paxman being another example) who's not afraid to say what he thinks, even it's politically incorrect or he's going to get flack for it.

What irritates me about the horse racing commentary is that the assessment of why a horse has value is limited to 'it's steaming on the exchanges' or vague comments like 'he ran well last year at Chepstow'. OK, I know it can be a little more advanced than that, but not much!

Just look at the TV pundits, McCririck, Thommo etc. They are dinosaurs and most people are sick of listening to them. McCririck makes good points occasionally but they are ignored more often than not because of all the other crazy rants he comes out with.

One thing I would like to see on TV is odds compilers assessing horses' chances.

I've no doubt that the current commentators are horseracing experts. But having an encyclopedic knowledge of horseracing doesn't of itself tell you whether this race's 2-1 favourite is overpriced (let alone why).
