Hi everyone,

I am a lifelong punter but have decided to stop betting in the traditional manner and try trading....why it has taken me so long to realise that it is the best way to bet on sports is a mystery to me but hey ho!

I have downloaded Bet Angel Basic and opened up a Betfair account and over the last few days I have watched dozens of videos on how to trade - but it is all very new to me and I think it will take a while for me to get my head around it and all the terminology.

I was wondering of there was an app/program that enables me to practice trading without losing real money - like a play money account or simulator? I am serious about learning all i can but it makes sense to me to limit my liabilities in the short term so I can understand how trading works and learn the best markets for me to play.

Any advice would be welcome and gratefully received.

Cheers

Hi Stu,

Welcome, Ive only been here a few months, but i noticed no one has responded so I thought Id help.

There is free play, I am not sure if it is bet angel basic or bet angel professional but it is available.

When you click on Bet angel to load, It should offer you a choice; Live mode or practise mode. This is available every time you load bet angel.

Best of luck

Bet Angel basic is more or less identical to how it is on the betfair website so to use anything that you have viewed in the video tutorials you will need a copy of Bet Angel Trader or Pro - you can see the full comparison of each version using this link

http://www.betangel.com/trader/compare.php

If you serious about learning I would advise you to download Bet Angel professional (you get a 2 week free trail) which is more than enough time to allow you to fully try out and evaluate everything Bet Angel has to offer, then after trying all the features you can decide which version best suits your needs as you move on to a subscription.

As well as whats shown in the link above the fastest refresh time available in basic is only 1 second where as Pro allows as fast as 200ms (5 times faster) and very important if you intend to trade the the horse racing.

Finally only the Bet Angel Trader & Pro versions have a practice mode, this mirrors the live markets and lets you use every the function/feature but with no risk to any money.
So its perfect for fully familiarizing yourself with the software and learning how to place back & lay bets, close out a position, green up etc. Even once you understand how everything works its still a excellent way for you to still test out new strategies with out ever risking any money.
(If you have seen any of the video's where the banner across the top is in orange this is practice mode and you will see its identical to the real thing except for not risking any money)

Thanks Dallas I will download the trial version and have a play around......I've never traded before so I am a bit nervous about it all and doing lots of reading and watching videos but it seems the best way to bet, provided you get your figures right!

They say you can't teach a dog new tricks. Considering you appear to be 132 years of age, I wish you well Stu :)

You might be wise to find a recent lengthy thread from Lammtarra. Yes, sports trading is within the gambling sphere, but don't make the mistake of not distinguishing between the two.

You will make losses on some markets, you will make mistakes. However, don't make the biggest mistake of all - chasing losers, and becoming reckless due to having suffered a red screen.

Always accept a loss, never let a bad trade run 'in play' - with betting, you always get a run for your money. Don't adopt the same attitude with a trade that goes against you. Take the red screen, analyse what you did wrong and move on to the next market

Welcome aboard, you'll get some good advice here and don't be offended by my occasional jokes which are in bad taste ;)

There is no need to be nervous once you have placed a few trades you ll be surprised how quick you'll pick things up - like most things it ll become clearer and make more sense when you actually do it and while your in practice mode you are risking absolutely nothing and you can continue this way until you feel fully comfortable on how to place a bet, close a trade and use some of BA's many other features etc.

Even if the trial does end before you fully understand things you can subscribe on a per day basis for a just £1 and continue to use in practice mode.

Then when you do move onto real money just start with a small amount in your account.

As LeTiss said there is tons of advice on here and If you do get stuck with anything and cant find the answer just put up a post and someone will respond.

Above all just enjoy it and have some fun

Thanks LeTiss & Dallas.......great advice from you both.

Im quite disciplined and feel I would probably be better trading as I think there are more opportunities to exploit and whilst I know I will lose at some point, the potential ongoing rewards are more in my favour provided I understand the process and read the markets and games correctly.

I can't wait to get started......trial software downloaded already!
