What actually causes Bet Angel to stop or go 'sticky'?

I was happily trading this afternoon, starting at about 13:45hrs. Everything was fine, running normally, until 16:30 hrs when Bet Angel started to 'stick', sometimes stutter and sometimes stop for a second or two.

I did alter my Communication Settings a while ago (Tuner=7, Data requests=18, Matched/Unmatched bets=200 millisecs, P&L=500 millisecs, Full Mkt Depth=500 millisecs, Traded Vol= 500 millisecs and connection smoothing is OFF. Guardian at 1 sec), but it's only today that I've had this problem.

I have no idea whether or not the problem was at my end, Bet Fair end or wherever. However, I'm curious to know what sort of thing causes these types of glitch? Is there anything I can do ensure that the software runs as smoothly as possible? (does VPS give a smoother connection for example?)

Whilst I cannot be 100% certain I can say that most times it turns "sticky" it's a simple case of no data or intermittent data. Basically the software displays the data you request from Betfair's servers. If it cannot update then it will "stick" whilst it waits for the data to update/refresh. If there is a delay greater than normal it will then lurch forward as it gets the new data. If it cannot get fresh data then it can freeze totally. The causes could be numerous if you wanted to get really technical but common causes in no particular order could be

1. Betfair server issues
2. Broadband issues
3. PC issues e.g. virus, hardware(driver) issue
4. Local modem/router issues.

A VPS is less likely to have its own router or hardware issues but they can still occur. If the Betfair server has issues or you lose the internet connection then having a VPS will make no difference, it will stick or freeze similar to your own PC.

Hope that helps

if you have software like itunes on your machine - that can cause hang ups (did in my case) - it as some pain in the arse thing called apple mobile device that seems to try and take over your machine whenever it feels like - even if you delete it somehow it manages to resurrect itself - also make sure you have nothing that likes to update itself at the most inopportune times without telling you

I'm not too familiar with the lags/sticky mentioned but I'm with To75ne on turning off things that update randomly.
Years ago I used to use Norton Antivirus which seemed to take forever to update on a slower connection, plus use a huge amount of memory to the point not much else could be done on the computer, I use AVG now and only update around 2am when I'm not using the computer.

Microsoft/Windows updates too have a habit of updating and forcing a restart if it's not postponed, for those that get taken away from the pc/dragged out shopping with the missus, this could be a lot more costly than the shopping trip! I choose to let windows tell me when updates are available then download them later.

Blue screen of death is probably the most unpredictable disaster, had it twice in the last 24 hours due to an old USB tv tuner I was trying out from way before windows 7 days, it's gone in the recycley bin with the beer cans :)

First thing to do is to ramp up the data request limits. Is they are pesistantly above your previous threshold (18) then Bet Angel will start to buffer calls. So you can then adjust various calls until they come back below the limit you want to set.

If you have stuffed Guardian full of markets you may get a resource issue with your PC.

Thank you for the input guys. It got me thinking and checking. Certainly does no harm to review what you have running - invited as well as uninvited! Task Manager is a useful aid for sure.

Obviously I'll be monitoring the situation as I trade - but hopefully any possible future glitches will be minimised.

Ive had a couple of sticky issues with both BetAngel and another software but they came when in practice mode with both. Maybe this is a possible culprit?
