In three words or less
I once made the mistake of telling the neighbours, when they asked, that I was a gambler. It didn't go down well with the bunch of toffee-nosed bigots who thought that they were smart but actually had the IQ of a plant.
We moved. I didn't make that mistake again. Now when the new neighbours ask what I do for a living, I tell them that I am an Information Analyst. They nod sagely with approval.

"Bookmaker finance supporter/extractor" depending on results
What I really say to those I know will not understand is "I work in the betting industry".
The difference in outlook on betting between my peers (25-32) and older (40+) I find very different, I think it is the 9-5 permanent pensionable mindset as that is the way the world worked until the 00s. Interested to hear all your views on this
Id guess that of people who "gamble" 1/100 have a problem but problem gambling gets definitely most of the coverage in media, etc (academic figures claim that 90% of literature has a problem gambling focus despite it accounting for less than 0.5% of those who gamble).

I still don't know what to say to people when they ask what I do. "Retired" hides the fact that I'm busy all day and invites them to think they do me a favor by asking if I can help fixing their computer. "Investor" always seems to provoke "how about investing in my idea for a startup" so I've stopped using that one too. Sometimes I say "researcher", because I always try to learn more about machine learning, asset allocation, and other stuff. But most of the time I just say I work in software because that usually stops them from asking any further.
In three words: pseudo-retired researcher/investor

Having lived near GCHQ I'm used to people saying "I can't tell you what I do", or "I could tell you but I'd have to kill you" ... that seems like a good answer for the nosey neighbours.
