I'm not a racing fanatic, but what happens with on-course bookmakers these days?

Do they have people watching the exchanges & informing them of movers, or do Betfair prices reflect or react to what the bookies are offering?

If they are shortening a selection on track, is there not a window where you could back it on Betfair, before traders sat at home knows it's even changed?
Hi LeTiss

If I visit a track I try and chat to the rails bookmakers and get a sneaky look at what they're doing ;)

They have Betfair on a laptop usually and will take a look at what is happening.

You can get a headstart on prices but you have to be aware that it can also bite you. I have seen horses drifting on Betfair and getting smashed on course. It depends on how strong the market is as some days there will be 1 man and his dog at the course.

Generally you find it easier to catch a real steamer or drifter when it is caused by a "word" at the track. Bookies may be lots of things but they are not fools. They use a good network for information and once word is out they will usually be one step ahead.

The interaction between Betfair and bookmaker markets has been steadily changing over the years! IMHO I think Betfair has a bigger influence now whereas a few years ago it was the opposite. Admittedly that doesn't work carte blanche, there will always be markets where the bookies have the whip hand.

The movement on Curley horses is not really caused by the same thing. Barney is well known so once word gets out that one is off the money comes from everywhere - and rarely gets left behind!

Hi JollyGreen,

I agree with everything you say except the above....

Its a fact that course bookies dump liability on the exchange, and id probably guess thats what forces the price to bottom out on the exchange in the last 5 minutes of trading. That or certain 'big' traders smash into a curley runner as they know every trader, punter and his dog are sitting there waiting for the possible move and attempt to ride the wave out knowing all the other traders are likely to carry their money to their exit point!! ...i noticed theirs a thread headed 'curley alert' could be a good way of making sure everyone is watching ;) ....that or im getting paranoid lol

No, we are singing from the same hymn sheet - sorry if my message seemed ambiguous. Basically what I was trying to say was that "teams" on course or people with laptops, bluetooth headsets etc will have an effect with the Curley horses but bookies simply need a phone call and/or a laptop and it all kicks off both with Betfair and other bookies. Barney is so well known now that the fun can often start before the bookies have even setup their pitch at the course

I must admit I only looked at one race that day in the bookies (and other than SIS I dont know which station it was broadcast on). Maybe I'll have a look again?
The Ipad is so small and looks very inconspicuous (esp in a black wallet)
6.5 secs is a lifetime in this game!

PS I sometimes get the chance to get to Old Trafford, has anyone got any views as to whether this would be advantageous trading it at the event?? Thanks
Hi Peter,

You'll have to be exceptionally quick to beat the clock at a Premier League match
These games are suspended the second anything happens, I think perhaps a lower division match live on TV, or any unmanaged 'in play' market could be better for this.
This is why sports like Racing & tennis are targeted, because every market is unmanaged until there's a winner
